For some reason I did not find any mention of this new format. Well, not entirely new, since it is based on MD (Mini-Disc).
What's in it for us? A lot. It will become the best way to get high quality sound in the field and into your editing workstation. Several hours of ATRAC3+ at 132 Kbps on a single disk, recorded from mike that you can place practically anywhere you want (recorder itself is very small and highly autonomous), and uploadable (for the first time with MD media) to computer.
Since it is digital and you can position precisely with timecode (sorry for a loose use of a term), syncing with video should be painless. Of course, better tools and out-of-box support for capturing from Hi-MD device would be appreciated.
I know, Spot is already using and recommending MD devices. Hi-MD is a definite step forward. And should be available very soon.
