I usually work 24-bit/44.1 kHz just to match my guitar effects processor when recording via S/PDIF. (The Covert Diaspora collection is at this bit-depth and sample rate.) Working with 96 kHz could be overkill (there's that whole Nyquist Frequency thing), but it does match its analog counterpart more closely, so it's just a matter of personal taste (and if your system can handle the processing load). If the VSTi you're using does 24-bit processing, then your track(s) could benefit from it, as MIDI is just a set of instructions that eventually becomes digital audio as a result of the VSTi.
