I currently own Vegas and had asked in that forum about using something to help with the noise for live recording (recording using a camcorder and external mic). Noise Reduction was recommended and I think I'll go ahead and get that. The question I had was whether or not to get Sound Forge also ( I can get it for $80 more if I purchase them together). Besides video taping, I would now like to try recording my sons piano and sax directly into the computer (using a mic and preamp pluged into my computer). I'm not using this for professional purposes, so I don't need it to be perfect. Is there any advantage of getting Sound Forge, or can Vegas do pretty much the same thing. Eventually, we may get a keyboard or electric piano. From what I've read, Vegas doesn't support MIDI. Would I then need a program like Sound Forge? Thanks. |

Sound Forge doesn't support MIDI either, although both Sound Forge and Vegas will record the audio output of a MIDI keyboard through the line in of the sound card. For what you are doing, Vegas will probably handle everything you want to do. Vegas also burns Redbook compliant disc-at-once audio CDs, which Sound Forge can't do. On the other hand, there are a few advanced features in Sound Forge that Vegas doesn't have (reversing audio being one of the oft noted ones). Many of us feel that using Noise Reduction is easier in Sound Forge than in Vegas. You'd probably be glad you got Sound Forge, but you'll have to decide if you want to spend the extra $80 for it or not. Personally, i'd go for it. Then again, i already did when i got Noise Reduction and Sound Forge 6 as a bundled package. |

I find Sound Forge an invaluable addition to Vegas. As Kelly said, it allows you to go much "deeper" with what you can do to a wave file. Especially when working with voice-based audio, to be able to right click, open a copy of the clip in SF, hit it with Noise Reduction & Normalize, then have the new file appear in Vegas when you return is quite a plus. It will also cut down on tracks, as you won't have to set up a new plugin scheme for every different thing you want to do to your audio. If you have a particular event that needs a quick "this" or "that," again you just throw it into SoundForge, make the alteration and you're good to go. |
