to be honest, the best way to learn the program is to actually "get your fingers dirty!!" in other words, just dive right in and start playing. BUT, getting a tutorial like that will help to learn the basics of the program. and YES even though it is for version 3.0, it will still help yo ulearn the basics of the program. i say, go for it!! any one on this forum (well, most anyway) will be more than happy to start you in the right direction!! it is a very powerful tool (acid) when it is used correctly. just concentrate on the basics right now! (time stretching, key changing, loop configuration, beatmapping) i, myself am a dj and a producer, and i have been a loyal and faithful user of acid since version 1.0!!!
good luck

easiest way to start learning....
1. load a song in.
2. beatmap the song (beatmapper will launch automatically)
3. eq the song to take most of the bass out
4. start laying loops underneath the song.

very primitive...but you will start learning the basics of how to manipulate song samples and beats. cut the song up into diff. bits and pieces. its not as hard as it may seem now, i promise!! :)
ill give you some friendly advice though....take about 3 days off from work and any signifigant other you may have!!! cuz once you start getting the hang of it, the rest of the world kinda just disappears!!! :)

im VERY familiar with trance! (thats what i produce) when you beatmap a song, you can now stretch it to any BPM you want! just say you bring in a song...ummm.....castles in the sky, ian van dahl, well it beatmaps to around 140 BPM. you wanna make a remix at 142 bpm and put your own beats behind it...its all VERY possible with acid. thats what the program is pretty much designed for! so, to answer your question, yes, acid can do everything your wanting it to do!

I think you'd probably benefit from the book. Diving in and playing around is great. However, the book is good at showing you WHERE to dive.
It all depends...If financially it's difficult coming up with the money to buy it, than skip it. If the cost isn't a burden, than it's worth it.
If you couple the book with the PDF file that gives the Acid Pro 4.0 New Features, available from this site, than you should be set.

The book has been a great resource for me. It has helped a lot. The tutorials are the best part.

The nice thing about this is the Sample files they give you. I actually found a missing file way back last year regarding chapter 2 I believe. The good folks at SoFo were nice enough to email it to me. The book is a great resource and I highly recommend it. I'm hoping that once ACID 5.0 comes out, Sony will produce the newer book.

Come to think of it, I hope that all the original people involved with ACID and the Sams book are still around!
