Hey. When I render a final mix of a project, I use only a few of the filetypes given: .wav (microsoft), .rm, .ac3, and the occasional .mp3. So, what are all those zillions of other audio filetypes for? There are several types of .wav's. Why?
they're all actually common formats and quite useful (I've used nearly all of them for one reason or another):
------------------------------------------------------------
.aif - common mac / protools audio format (think .wav for mac)
.ac3 - dolby digital of course
.mpg - older mpg compression formats used in broadcast, other areas
.mp3 - duh
.ogg - ogg vorbis, open source audio coder, "ip free"
.mov - quick time movie format (apple, etc.)
.wav - scott wave - I believe it's wave with more header information
.pca - lossless compression format by Sony (approx 2to1 compression)
.w64 - gets around the .wav 2 GB limit
.avi - standard a/v for windows
.wma - windows media audio
.wmv - windows media video
