Subject:weird, weird crashing -- help!

Acid's been working great for a long time, no problems.

Suddenly, I'm crashing over and over in a project -- at the same exact point!
(I get a screen freeze, then that SEND/DON'T SEND microsoft message, then the app quits completely).

WHAT IS GOING ON? There's nothing unusual about the point I crash. CPU usage meter shows I'm not peaking over 25.......
---------------------------------------------
My event error log looked like this:

I got this APP ERROR once (EVENT ID 1000):
*****Faulting application acid40.exe, version 4.0.0.408, faulting module acid40k.dll, version 4.0.0.408, fault address 0x000cb820.

Then I got the same exact App error, EVENT ID 1000, 11 times in a row(presumably for each crash):
*****Faulting application acid40.exe, version 4.0.0.408, faulting module acid40k.dll, version 4.0.0.408, fault address 0x000c63b3.

---------------------
After the first 8 or 9 crashes (and app errors were recorded), XP recorded 3 system errors occurring at exactly the same time (to the second):

DCOM got error "The service database is locked. " attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

DCOM got error "The service database is locked. " attempting to start the service ImapiService with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:
{520CCA63-51A5-11D3-9144-00104BA11C5E}

DCOM got error "The service database is locked. " attempting to start the service ccPwdSvc with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{DBA28A20-5CE1-4E8D-AD35-418B62269E54}

**********Anybody have a clue about this?

What happens if you start play after the point where the crash occurs?
Start at the point where the crash occurs?

Try removing any FX you have in the project one at a time.

Are there any envelopes at the point?

Are you using any VSTis?

The problematic project has far fewer tracks and FXs than projects I usually work on, that I have no issues with.

I did a bunch of stuff that didn't help, and based on something you said, I fixed the crashing. I'm just VERY curious what happened.

*-*-*-* Project has 26 tracks, 8 muted. FX on only 3 tracks, one of which is muted. Only 1 envelope, a Volume Envelope that works on a tiny bit of music that plays 2-3 seconds before the crash (the crash happened during playback of another track).

Following the "crashing track", I have 2 very short separate drum tracks, both 1-shots, playing at the same time, one is pitched up +17. These tracks play a full 3 seconds after my other track that crashes.

One of the drum tracks has 2 FX -- distortion & paragraphic EQ. Despite the fact these play AFTER the track that crashed, I FIXED THE PROBLEM by removing these 2 FX from the one drum track.

*-*-*-*Nothing else I did (playing the track from various start points, moving the loop bar, creating a "save as" project, re-starting the computer, etc, etc) had ANY effect; I still crashed till I removed the FX. (and remember that my drain on the CPU was low throughout, no peaks over 30%)

*-*-*-*QUESTIONS: what happened? (...do some FX not work well together? since I've done similar stuff with no problems, IS SOMETHING OTHER THAN FX CONTRIBUTING? -- ie, up-pitching, etc.)

And: if a track has FX but it's muted, does it have ANY effect on my project or CPU? if a track has FX boxes that aren't checked, does that have any effect?

*-*-*-* Thank you very very much for personally posting, Mr. Sony Man (aka Peter). And have a happy holidays.
