For all practical purposes it's impossible. Search this forum for "remove vocal" and you'll see way more discussion than you'll ever want to read.

re-record the song, and tell the singer to stay home this time

Assuming its a stereo mix and the vocal is kept dead centre you can try this.

Make an inverted copy of each channel, EQ to isolate only the vocal range and then add inverted to the other channel. So what you're doing is subtracting the vocal from the left channel from the right and vice versa.
The results though really depend on how it was recorded, at best they're far from 100%.
BTW, my crappy soundcard has this built in. Result varies from useless to just useable.

Software at this link. Results vary geatly according to the particular mix and are often far from perfect:

The funny thing about this besides the fact that it's stealing is. most that want to do this are looking to retain the groove, namely drums and bass.

Let's ignore the fact that even in the best of scenarios there will be a ghost of the vocals left behind, since the drums and bass are almost always, especially the kick and snare, down the center, none of this will be left after removing the center effective rendering it usless.

The thing I find funny is that this same question gets posted here at least once a month. Then other users actually keep responding to them. I'm starting to think it's the same person asking the question, and are too dumb to remember their login name(thus it's different every month) or just too dumb to do a search and see the other 10 million replies to the same question.

To quote my brother, who answers dumb questions all the time on a variety of topics, "Haven't you ever heard of Google?" This question comes up so much, I think that the very clear and easy to find FAQ and knowledgbase articles may not be enough. How about a "Enter Password for new account: (Warning:If you're signing up to ask how to remove vocals, don't bother.)

I would never let a singer using Sound Forge record a song. Have the singer re-sing the song while NOT using Sound Forge.
