I'm looking for a way to make vocals sound wierd. Does anybody know any effects that I put on it that will make it sound strage?

Flange, verb, EQ cuts, distortion...just start hitting them with plugins and play around...

vocoders work very well for strange sounding effects. (on anything)

I have the Zerius Vocoder, but you can't understand the vocals after you use it. Is there a way to make it more understandable?

not familiar with that exact one, but there should be settings on it. try playing with those. (i use the vocoder in reason which is just simply amazing!) :-)

for a vocoder, throw it on a buss and adjust the level accordingly, that way you have a mix of both.

but to make them messy, just add as many effects as possible to one track and just got nuts. put the effects in different orders....just got nuts!

To add to what everyone's said, you probably will have to play around with settings depending on the vocal; a setting that works for a voice in the upper frequency will probably work differently for a voice in the lower frequency.

I can tell you that for a vocoder-type effect, there are two things that you can add to the chain that will help intelligibility—distortion and compression.

Be sure to experiment.

Should these effects be put on the carrier, modulater, or after it's been vocoded?

Before it even gets to the vocoder, specifically:

compression>distortion>vocoder

The modulator is the source for vocoding; the carrier is the sound used when using the vocoding effect. For example, the modulator would be one's voice while the carrier would be, say, a synth or guitar.

(If you distort/compress the guitar or synth signal, BTW, there's no need to add more distortion/compression to the chain.)
