Subject:Newbie...compressing sound for web

Have a wav file...(one of many) to place in a site. The wav files are running about 5534KB from CD extraction. Is there any way to compress the file without loosing quality prior to playing the file to the site?
And anything else I should do?
All help would be appreciated.

MP3 works well with often very little noticeable loss in quality. Most sites post music files at 128Kbps which results in files about 1/11 the size of what you extract from the CD, so that file would then be about 500KB. You can experiment with lower bitrates until you get to the point where the quality loss is unacceptable. I've had good success going as low as 24Kbps with some material such as speech.

Adding to what Chienworks said, if this is for a Web site that's being hosted by some Web hosting provider, it's likely they have a streaming audio server of some sort for either RealAudio/RealMedia or Windows Media, which is usually included in the hosting plan.

From there, it's usually a case of encoding in either format, uploading it to the designated folder and then pointing to the media in your Web page(s) using code (via HTML).
