I'm a newbie to Sound Forge 7, so please be gentle. I have two initial questions.

1. Whenever I try to open a mpeg that I rendered from Vegas I get a pop up telling me that I need to purchase a plug-in. Why won't SF recognize the fact that Vegas already has that plug-in and use it, or is this just another way for Sony to collect more money?

2. Can you select a section of audio from within Vegas and copy it and then paste it into SF to edit it? So far, I have not been able to do this. Perhaps, I am doing it wrong or it is not possible?

Help?? Thanks

Mike

1. You should never have to pay for the same plug-in twice. If the mpeg plug-in is unlocked in Vegas it should be available in Sound Forge as well. If this is not the case for you, the first thing I would recommend is to use the migration tool utilities installed with Sound Forge 7. Look in your Start Menu for the one labelled "Copy Sony Plug-In Licenses from Installed Sonic Foundry Plug-Ins." Run this and it should fix your problem.

2. Have you tried r-clicking on the media in Vegas and choosing "Open Copy in Audio Editor?"

Hope that helps,
Steve

Sony Steve thank you for replying. I have run the migration tools and am still having problems. I have tried all variations from Sony to Sonic Foundry and also the other direction. I updated SF before ever trying to use it. I own SF, Vegas 4 and DVD Architect, so there shouldn't be any problems but somehow they are not reading each other. What is my next step in resolving this problem?

I have a similar problem. Everything worked great, Vegas and SF but then SF started giving me errors that that "file type" wasn't supported anymore. Even though I never had a time limit since the begining of the installation. Vegas still works but SF apparently is on the MPEG Encoding "Trial" mode.

Does anybody know how to fix it?

Not sure what might be going wrong here. Were all applications installed to their default directories, or were they put in custom locations?

There's a Knowledge Base article dealing with plug-in issues caused by the switch from Sonic Foundry to Sony. It may be useful.

I installed all of these in their default positions. This is a new computer. I installed SF first then Vegas and then DVD-A. Do you think that there would be any benefit in uninstalling all the programs and them reinstalling them? It would be nice if these things worked like they are supposed to.

I uninstalled SF then reinstalled it and the mpegs would read fine. Then I updated to 7.0a and now I am back to the same message problem telling me that I need to buy mpeg encoder. I ran the migration tools but still does not correct the problem. There is obviously a bug here between the two versions of SF.

Ok, I can repro your problem, and have a workaround.

Uninstall DVD Architect and run Vegas again. Try to render a project to MPEG and it should ask you to register the plug-in. Do so.

Now run the "Copy Sony Plug-In Licenses from Installed Sonic Foundry Plug-Ins" utility. Run Sound Forge again and you should be able to use the MPEG plug-in.

Re-install DVD Arch and you're back in business.

Please let me know if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks,
Steve

Sony Steve - thanks for the work around. Everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks again.

Good call, Steve! That fixed it for me too, and was much easier than having to call customer service as others on the forum have ended up doing.

I'll have nightmares tonight trying to imagine how long it took you to come up with that workaround... ;)

Still hope a more "automatic" solution comes along soon, as this is a great way to use up activation counts...

It looks like there's a problem getting the DVD Arch license to copy over to the new Sony registry hive. Sorry about the goof. We'll try and make sure this gets fixed for the next round of updates.

A quick reminder - it's always a good idea to copy down your activation code (found in the About dialog from the Help menu) if you ever need to uninstall and reinstall an application. That way you can just enter your AC instead of a serial number and not use up another activation.

Thanks,
Steve

I'll get an article posted into our knowledgebase to address this problem. Thanks for your patience, everyone! I'll update this thread with the link.
