This machine is based around an AMD XP2500+ with 512megs of ram, 40gig interal hd, external FW drive, and with both firewire and USB 2.O ports. I know this laptop far exceedes the minimum requirements that are needed to run these programs....but my question has to do with audio caputure devices. I've been considering the UA-1D usb (edirol) and Firewire 410 (M Audio) as capture devices. I work mainly in classical recording (2-track mixed on the fly) and would usually be taking a digital feed from a DAT recorder. Portability is an issue. So...my question is.....will either of these devices work for capture with Sound Forge 7? What is confusing is the abundant amount of info available for some devices......and then a total lack of info for other devices. I assume Sound Forge will recognize most any sound/audio I/O card/device? I think I want to use a firewire connection of some type....since I will be mainly using s/pdif I/O.....but if something as simple and affordable as the UA-1D will provide the stable/accurate/true digital I/O, then it is worth a try. Could the UA-1D be used to monitor playback from SF7 through a DAT recorder (in monitor mode) or digital speakers or through a DA converter? I assume that once the audio is in the computer in a digital format, all DSP would occur with the computers CPU....not the capture device. So....is anyone using these devices with SF7? It is based around a dedicated audio processing card that handles all DSP functions for recording, editing, cd burning etc... The system CPU is pretty much free from use for audio processing. This system is excellent, but I need something more portable and need to consider a replacement as age is about to render this system useless......and MTU is no longer manufacturing this DSP card....and has yet to offer a CPU dependent version of their MicroEditor and MicroCD software. So...some of this computer audio stuff is new to me, since most of it was already "figured out" with the MTU turnkey workstation.

I'd probably go with the M-Audio's FireWire 410, mostly because the 410 does 24-bit/192 kHz and does FireWire. The UA-1D does only 16-bit/48 kHz max and uses USB 1.1. What I meant by monitoring was playback out of sound forge for editing, etc... What's sort of funny is that there is a split concensous as to the UA-1D being a serious piece of gear. It's doomed in many circles because of being usb1.1......but at the same time has been proven to provide an exact transfer of whatever digital information is put into it. Output from the UA-1D is a bit screwy though......Anyway..... Thanks for your input
