Does SForge have any type of preset for eliminating cassette-hiss-like noise? This noise happens during quieter passages of a live recording. It isn't really tape hiss, but sounds just like it. I have Noise Reduction but I understand you have to have an area to capture a noiseprint, which I don't have here. thanks.

I bet I could find a passage where you could get a noiseprint. Just look for a place where there is just the noise you want eliminated. Manually select it, open NR2, check the get noise print option, hit preview. Once it has the print, click selection and choose all sample data. hit ok. That runs the NR for the whole file. Not enough? hit the repeat button up top.

hope this helps. If not, how long is the file? I have broadband and can find the noise print for you.

On this topic, I'd be interested in knowing how long a hiss sample has to be---or if there is any minimum sample size, to get good noise reduction.

Going over an album of .WAV files all made from a tape, I found a good hiss sample on one of them only, but temporarily pasted that sample onto each one in turn, in order to run NR. I figured they all came off the same tape, so why not? There was probably an easier way to do that...

So how long is the minumum noise sample?

Dunno, but I have used less than 1/10 second without any trouble. One tip. I always select the noise patch, then normalize the peak to 0 db and listen to it again to make sure it has only noise, not a breath or something that could mess up the noiseprint. I undo the normalize and proceed from there.
