Subject:Incompatibility between SF products and Sonar

I use both Sonar and a number of Sonic Foundry (now Sony) including Acid Pro, SoundForge, and CD Architecht. In the beginning of this past May I was working in Sonar, switched over to Acid Pro 4 where I was auto-prompted to upgrade to Acid 4.0E. I went along, then switched back to Sonar (2.2) and found all of the directX plugins stripped out of my old files and basically non-functioning. It took a long time for me to get Sonic Foundry to acknowledge this as an issue, because it does not manifest itself in their own products, but they told me they changed the way their products handle plugins and this creates an incompatibility with Sonar in certain computer configurations. (You can visit the Cakewalk forum and find threads of people experiencing the same problem). This sadly impacted the files for many clients that I work with. After a month of dialogue with tech support folks, I finally on my own was able to get rid of the problem by doing an XP system restore. At some point I bought CD-Architect and that re-introduced the problem - so basically all the new products have this new architecture which creates this scenario. So I am unable to purchase any new Sony Media Software products going forward until this disparity is resolved. I have been talking with Cakewalk to see if they can counter this issue in their new updates to Sonar3 - but I haven't yet received a confident "YES - THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED".

I would love to hear from anyone else who has experienced this same problem in the hopes that we have any insights to offer each other.

In addition, I'm curious if there is any communication between the Sony Media Development team and Cakewalk so that this problem gets resolved and to prevent future incompatibilities from arising in the future?

This particular issue put me out of business for more than a month and put a dent in my confidence in a company I have trusted for a long time.

Does anyone else have Upgradaphobia?

I can't exactly speak for the SONAR issue, since I don't use that app. Does this thread help any?

It seems like at least half the time I upgrade an app, or get something new, my computer is fouled up terribly.
System restore has saved me many times, but not in all cases.

Important questions: can I confidently add CD Architect, Sound Forge and Sonar without all hell breaking loose?

Oh: is the new ACID UPGRADE working out for everybody? -- no problems, conflicts, does it add new features?

I got alot of crashes until I upgraded to the last one: 4.0e build 408, but things have been working pretty well since.

A week ago I upgraded Windows Media Player, some XP patches, etc. and couldn't get either of my CD drives to work. Sys Restore saved the day, but I've had to reload XP more than once and this stuff can be a royal pain.

Good luck, gigasaursus.

I'm quite sure you can get CD Architect and Sound Forge to cooperate fully with ACID Pro, since they're all Sony Pictures Digital products. For the most part, I know of others who are having no probems with, say, SONAR and ACID Pro.

4.0f? Been working great thus far. Does it add anything new? Not really. (Check the release notes for any fixes/changes.)

Sounds like something went completely bonkers when you updated Media Player and installed some XP patches. You might want to consider formatting to clear out any junk that may be residing in your existing install of XP. Sometimes it's the only way to be sure.

one thing i have taught myself when upgrading apps. ESPECIALLY sofo apps. is to UN-INSTALL the ORIGINAL program first. sofo is smart when they make updates to their products (at least in all my experiences so far) they actually provide a NEW program, NOT JUST AN UPDATE PATCH! ex...
acid 4.0b to acid 4.0e. un-install acid 4.0b, do a registry clean, DEFRAG, re-start your compute THEN...install the NEW acid 4.0e on a fresh re-start!!! i have had NO PROBLEMS doing this when updating ANY sofo products!! (knock on wood!)
this should help you...
