I have previously reduced the main vocals in a number of tracks without actually removing them and it worked very well. There was no plug in or any other program used other than SoundforgeXP and I can not for the life of me remember how the heck I did it?!? If you know how that would work please let me know!

Highlight one of the channels and copy it, then paste it into a new file (Ctrl-E). Process/Invert this new file. Hightlight the other channel in the original file and copy it, then PasteMix this into the new file setting both the source and the destination to 50% (-6.0dB) before mixing. It's not a perfect method, but it does diminish whatever is panned dead-center, which is usually the lead vocal.

I know absolutely nothing about it and cannot guarantee that this works or will not harm your system but you might like to look at:

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio.htm

for their "Vocal Remover" DirectX plug-in

The analogx.com Vocal Remover pretty much does exactly the procedure i described above. If you've already got SoundForge then there isn't really any need to get Vocal Remover.
