Subject:No sound when recording from an audio tape Posted by: gayl Date:11/14/2003 2:38:21 PM Hi, I have an audio cable plugged at one end in the earphone jack of my tape recorder, (RadioShack Voice Recorder) and the other end is plugged into the line in jack of my Game Theatre (this is my sound card). The Windows Sound Properties are set at: Recording: "line in" is selected The voice on the audio tape is not being recorded at all. I've tried plugging the audio cable into the mic jack on the tape recorder, and that doesn't work. Don't have any other jacks to try. Any help would be gratefully accepted. Thanks gayl

If you have no sound, then either the volume control on the tape recorder is all the way down or the volume setting for the line in is too low. You will have to try various combinations of settings for both to get an appropriate level to record.

Maybe a couple other things to verify. Is the volume turned up on the voice recorder. This might be obvious, but just in case I would disconnect the cord you have connected and plug in an ear piece to verify there is audio coming out of the jack and raise the volume if it's too low. The other problem I see with your setup, is that the ear piece jack is a mono output, thus you should be using a 2 conductor 1/8inch male jack. On the other side there should be an 1/8" 3 conductor male jack. You need to ensure that the SLEEVE of the 1/8" mono is connected to the SLEEVE of the 1/8" stereo, and that the TIP of the 1/8" mono is connected to the TIP and the RING of the 1/8" Stereo jack. This will ensure that both channels are present of your stereo input on your sound card and that the audio signal is properly grounded. One other thing to check is that the LINE IN volume level is turned up in the Windows Recorder properties. This might also already be obvious to you.
