Pioneer A06 and/or others

I'm trying to decide which DVD burner to purchase....looking at the multiformat units (+ and -) A06, the Sony, Memorex, Verbatim, and Iomega....
The "supported" drives on the SoFo website are pretty limited and of course there's the disclaimer, "other drives may work, but we don't guarantee it"...
Is there some sort of updated, supported drive list out there somewhere? Anybody know if A06 or others (not on the "list") function properly with Architect?
Thanks - db

I have an A05. It is fabulous. The A06 looks better in every respect. I'd get either it or the Sony.

One of the more popular drives on the Market, the Pioneer A06 drive is NOT supported by Sony. Pity I sould have checked this forum first. Now I will have to go out and buy some new software, can anyone recommend a good DVD package?

See the response support response below,

Thank you for contacting Sony Pictures Digital.

I am sorry to inform you that the DVD drive that you are using, is not supported by DVD Architect. Here is a direct link to a list of DVD drives that are supported with DVD Architect:

I find it very difficult to believe that DVD Architect won't work with the A06. This looks like a mindliess response from Sony (sorry Kimberly K, whoever you are). All that they say at the link you provided is that they only tested with a handful of drives, but that others might work. Given that Windows has been using the device driver model for over fifteen years, most software makes calls to a device driver and therefore if the drive manufacturer has done their job (and I'm pretty sure Pioneer has), these drives should work with all software.

If you are having a problem with the A06, I bet something else is the cause.

Maybe others that have the A06 can chime in (I have the A05).

I don't know what the issue is that many newer drives don't work as you'd expect, but I do recall a couple three years back Roxio was saying basically the same thing with the then new Easy CD Creator 5 and there was a similar protest in that forum. Oops... mailing list.

I got an idea... Maybe Sony should buy Ahead software next. ;-)

Take a look how complete the drive support is for Nero:

In reading some of the old threads some users with A04 drives also experienced a similiar message. Sony eventually solved the problem up posting the .C upgrade. It also appeared that not all users that had this problme was related to the -r disks. The -RW disks seemed to have worked ok.

Of course it may be a HW or driver problem.

The error message is Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1682, this may indicate that the problem is in the Sony code.

Is anyone else using the A06 drive and -r disks?

Thanks

My Pioneer A06 (Lacie brand, Firewire external) works with the DVDA.

Cheers

The TDK drive isn't listed as tested either, but DVDA burns DVD-R to it with no problems.
