Can anyone recommend a book or a site that deals with sample looping? I sampled a Colombian wooden wind instrument called Gaita and am having a hard time setting loop points. I'm using SoundForge 6 to do this. There are no clicks (slope and level settings seem correct) but if I loop one cycle I get a buzzing sound. If I loop several cycles I get a weird cyclic sound which I believe is due to the fact that the timbre changes over time.
Any help is appreciated.
Serge

How long of a loop are you selecting? If it's short (<50ms), then the looping itself can be audible, so make sure it's longer than that. In general, longer is betterif you can afford to have larger samples.

Second, make sure that you're using the loop tool (Ctrl+L) to make sure that the loop is continuous (sounds like you are doing that), and then also make sure that the material before the loop end and after the loop beginning are similar enough that there's not an audible change once/loop.

Getting good loops for sample playback isn't easy, sorry. Don't know of any sites offhand. If you're making loops for ACID, that's a different story entirely, so I hope I addressed the correct case.

Joel

Serge, may I have a crack at that sample? I'm always compiling material for future reference in case somebody else has a similar problem. (And possibly a future book.)

You can contact me via any of the links below.

The samples are not ACID and it is almost 1sec long.
I've sampled several notes and I managed to loop them well except two that are giving me a hard time. I did use the loop tool. I tried to match slope and level.
Thanks for the reply,
Serge

I'll e-mail you the sample (~1 sec mono) as soon as I get home later this afternoon.
Thanks,
Serge
