Subject:cutting a 4 letter word out of a sountrack

Hello
Just got my SF7 upgrade from SF-XP. I don't know what terms to use to search on here or in the manual so I'm asking here.

I have a sound track opened from Vegas-4. I need to cut out 2 four letter words in the wave file.

Isn't there some way to zoom in on the wave file and "erase" that one 'spike" where the word is?

Not very familiar with Sound Forge as long time ago I mainly used Cake Walk. So I'd appreciate any help to get started.

Thanks
Allen

Place the cursor as close as you can to the offending word then use the Up arrow key to zoom in as close as you wish. You can zoom in far enough to have that one word fill the screen or even farther, but zooming in so that you have about 5 seconds or so accross the screen will probably be plenty. Select the word by dragging the mouse across the screen from the start of the word to the end of the word. You can adjust the start and end points while listening to the playback by clicking the Loop playback button (looks like two arrows bent around to point at each other and then the play button. The selected section will play repeatedly while you adjust the edges of the selection range in or out.

Once you've got the word selected, a simple way to blank it out is Process / Mute. You could also press the Delete key to delete it, but then the timing will be off and it may sound rather odd. If the silent spot is a problem you can copy a similar length section from somewhere else in the song, another word or even just instrumental, and paste it into that spot. If you want to get fancy you can play with the Paste / Mix feature to fade the edges together so it isn't an abrupt change.

You could also do all these functions within Vegas if you wish.

I'ld just to elaborate a little further and touch on some of the things Chien already informed you. There are several methods of doing cuss word edits.

My favorite is to have an instrumental and the full version with the words, lined up perfectly in Vegas on seperate Tracks. Then when you come to the cuss word, make a cut at the beginning and end of the word and allow the cuts to be performed on both versions. Delete the cuss word section, then replace it with the instrumental version. This will make it sound like the cuss word has just been muted out, and the music doesn't get interupted.

If the instrumental isn't available, then I recommend to do what chien previously described, by finding a similar part within the music where there are no vocals present, and copy/paste that section where the cuss word is present, and you should get the same effect as described above.

If that isn't available then what I would do, is select the cuss word in Vegas, then do a Open in Sound Forge. Within Sound Forge use the Reverse command, and reverse that section so the cuss word is no longer intelligible, and hit save, then go back to Vegas and listen to the changes.

Another technique is to replash the section where the cuss word is with a sound effect like a "beep", or something similar. This avoids a drastic mute condition, which always sounds bad. Most of this is best performed within Vegas without having to use Sound Forge, except for the reverse method.
