Subject:Decoding dbx 154 Processed Reel-to-Reel Recordings

I need to transfer a large number of original reel-to-reel recordings, that used a dbx 154 processor, to digital media. I would like to use one of Sound Forge 7's Dynamics tools to "decode" these recordings as I do not have a dbx 154 processor to do this in the analog domain. Can I use one of the tools such as Graphic Dynamics to emulate the reproduce side of the dbx 154 processor? If so, do you have any suggestions as to what settings to use. I can not find much information about how the dbx 154 works other than a "guess" that it uses a 1:2 expansion ratio with very short attack and release times. Any advice would be appreciated. Bill |

There were many codec parameters on the 150 series dbx noise reduction processors. Dynamic compress/expand was one, another was HF emphisis de-emphisis. I would look for a compatable dbx unit for proper decoding if this work is at all important. Check out e-bay, Digibid, and Soundbroker. There are probably many out there collecting dust. Seek and you shall find. |

Thanks for the input. I though that might be the only way to go. dbx 150x units are available for $50 to $100 each on eBay. Bill |
