Subject:MC MPEG not registered in SF7?

In SF7 I can't open an mpeg file or save to that format. I get a popup window asking me to buy the Main Concept plug-in. I have the registered Main Concept mpeg plug-ins from Vegas 4 and they still work in V4. How can I get mpeg 1 & 2 to work in SF 7?

I was running SF 7 in demo mode but I purchased it and entered the serial number.

the next time you install sf products, be sure to install sound forge first, there are bugs with sf licences and sony products.
BUT NOW Try regedit.exe and clean all MC serials from sony and sf products and enter the serials again but this time in sound forge.
to do this go to Start>Run and enter regedit.exe, now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > SONY MEDIA SOFTWARE > MC MPEG PLUG_IN > 2.0 > LICENCE. and there clean all serials(where you see key1 and current key), and the same with vegas, but instead of SONY MEDIA SOFTWARE, its sonic foundry.

Egads, there has to be an easier way. They can't be expecting everyone to be editing their registries to install software.

I looked in the registry and there is an entry under Sony Media Software> MC MPEG Plug-In>1.0 (not 2.0 as you wrote) but only a folder for Metrics, not Licence. No Key 1 or current Key listed.

In the Sonic Foundry folder the only Licence/keys I can find are within the folders for specific applications Acid/Sound Forge 6/Vegas. The Shared Information> Plug-Ins folder has a sub-folder for MCMPEG but it only contains sub-folders for Files and Owner. Within Owner Acid 4.0, Batch 5.0, DVD Architect 1.0, Forge 6.0, and Vegas 4.0 are all listed.

Which makes me wonder if I should have installed Forge 7.0 in the Sonic Foundry folder and not Sony.

I tried the Migration Tool but it didn't solve the problem.

The migration tool should have solved your problem (you do have MPEG available in Vegas 4, right?). Make sure that you are selecting the option to copy Sonic Foundry licenses to Sony (not the other way around). Start Sound Forge 7.0 after you have done this.

Please contact Customer Support if MPEG still doesn't work for you from Sound Forge 7.0.

No, do not force Sound Forge 7.0 to install in the Sonic Foundry folder. You are going to run into all sorts of problems using MPEG and MP3 from Sonic Foundry applications if you do that.

Yes, MPEG is working in Vegas 4 and Sound Forge 6. With the Migration tool I selected "Copy Sony Plug-In Licenses from Installed Sonic Foundry Plug-Ins." I restarted SF7 and it did not give me MPEG support. I then tried "Copy Sonic Foundry Plug-In Licenses from Installed Sony Plug-Ins" which also did not work. I tried each migration tool. This after uninstalling SF7, erasing the registry entries for Sony, and reinstalling SF7. I guess I'll have to call support on Monday.

I have several related questions:

With an AVI file loaded, I can choose 'save as' and get a number of options including MPEG-2 (unlike Rique). So in that respect I guess I.m lucky.

My question, though, is why is 'render as' greyed out? Under what circumstances should 'render as' be an option? The help file doesn't really explain it.

EDIT: I found out about 'render as'. It is only available when you are using a SF project. Still wondering about the following though ...

I also noted that I have options to 'save to Net MD' and 'save as CLIE' but when I select it, it says I don't have the proper devices. What is that?
Why would they be available as menu choices if I don't have those particular devices? Bug?

I have the same problem as the original poster. Tried all the migration tools without any success (I have Vegas 4 + DVD-A).

Good to know it's not just me. I suspect a lot more people have this problem but haven't checked. MPEG is probably not a very popular format for this application.

I wrote customer service and they emailed back instructing me to call their 800 number. They then gave me an activation code which unlocked the MPEG encoder. Issue solved.

Thanks for the update. I'll do the same.
