Didn't you find SF6 a lot more efficient to use than SF5? The jury is still out on SF7. |

I've spent hours with SF 7 and have yet to experience a bug. What's exactly your problem, akg? I have to say that 7.0 is a worthwhile upgrade, if only for the fact you can work with projects like you would in ACID or Vegas. You're no longer committed to changes even after you close the project. There are subtle differences to be sure (you can now sweep a range of frequencies, for example), but how do you improve on what's already great in the first place? I've got three bugs on my end: 1) SF7 crashes whenever you click in the playlist or region list tabs if they are empty. [I have no idea how this got by them] 2) I use a microsoft trackball explorer mouse.[current drivers] When I open up a file the normal behavior of my mouse wheel is too zoom in/out of the file.[same in all sony apps:acid,vegas,etc...] It breaks now and then to "scrolling down/up" the file in the timeline. ie:shift+mouse wheel behavior. Sometimes it goes between either way during the edit of a file. 3) If I add a file to the timeline and realize that its the wrong file I'll hit the cancel button which then freezes my system and then crashes it. None of this happens in SF6e. Though I have total confidence in the sony team to get the job done. My only gripe with SF7 is the new automation window in the plug-in chainer. Some plugins like the PSP42,Ozone,etc...take up sooooo much screen room that I wish we had the option of going between the two using a "TAB" button. Like in acid you can see either rewire outputs or vsti via a tab button. This would make things more economical for me. Also a "Auto resize" of the plug-in chainer window is long overdue...plugins come in many different sizes and going through them leaves the box in whatever the largest sized plugin has been used. To fix this all you have to do is "double click" on the top of the plugin chain window and it resizes it to the current plugin area. This should really be done automatically. I guess that I didn't ask this enough times to have it done...but I did ask. Though on a positive note I got my F12 play/pause feature added with this release so now I'm happy!!! Now if I click in any window and click F12 the file starts playing nomatter what has focus. I have F12 programed as button 7 of my contour shuttle pro. My workflow is now consistent with all my apps. Just my .02 cents. Ed. |

We are two small AM stations down in NW Florida that have been using CoolEditPro for the past 3 years in News and Production and have been very happy with it...especially compared to the "good old days" of razor blade tape editing! But Syntrillium has been sold to Adobe..and bye bye telephone teck support. So we are shopping for an alternate to start using when we move to our new studios around the first of the year. Several friends have suggested looking at Sound Forge. Well....looks like another creative concept has been gobbled up by the big bucks folks. And as for those of you that lament minimal Mac support...you have my sympathy too... as an AMIGA Video Toaster user since the 80's, I know what it means to lose a treasured special friend! Now THAT was a computer and even the little guy could afford to do video..especially when the Flyer version and Lightwave 3D were being used! Anyway...nuff for memories... NOW...SOME QUESTIONS for you Sound Forge Oldtimers. How would any of you compare Sound Forge to CoolEditPro? Would you suggest starting with SF6 and waiting out the debugging of SF7? I am looking at several Notebooks to do production. Any reccomendations? And what audio cards would you suggest? We are using Lynx One in our production room, and Creative's Ensoniq in our control-interview studio. Both are on P4, 1.5mz, Windows 2000Pro machines with lots of hard drive for audio storage. We have both connected to our Snap1 server so we can move files from one studio to the other for editing. And the server also lets us transfer audio or text files between our two station automations(RDS-Phantoms). We can do a live interview on the air, save the segment, and the newsman can pick up the file in production/news and have a story edited with a voice cut and on the air by the next top of hour newscast. So COOLEDITPRO has been very easy to learn and work with. As I have read thru a bunch of the threads on this forum it appears that many SF users are about as unhappy as the CoolEditPro writes on the Adobe forums? Any comments or suggestions will be read with interest by this small time broadcaster. |

"How would any of you compare Sound Forge to CoolEditPro?"--- I haven't used it but my combo of Vegas 4+Soundforge 6.0e is solid and when the bugs get worked out with version 7 it will be perfect. Much of what I've seen in 7 have been minor. No showstoppers that I think would sway you to not buy. "Would you suggest starting with SF6 and waiting out the debugging of SF7?"- If you could find a boxed version of 6 and buy it now I think that you will get the upgrade for free. Call customer service on this one. Again I feel i a month things will be worked out. "I am looking at several Notebooks to do production. Any reccomendations?"-- I would have one custom built at www.pcnirvana.com. Thats where many users get their stuff done. They know A/V and will build your system with only top quality components. "And what audio cards would you suggest?"--- www.echoaudio.com Best audio drivers bar none.[did I say that right?] Though take a look at www.midiman.com if you like audio cards with usb/firewire for your notebook. "As I have read thru a bunch of the threads on this forum it appears that many SF users are about as unhappy as the CoolEditPro writes on the Adobe forums?"--- Forums are normally where people go to complain more than to praise anything. Yes I've had complaints but to be totally honest with you I feel that support from sofo/sony products are the best anywhere. Even though its peer to peer you'll see the programers coming in to comment and debate with the rest of us. That right their had me sold from day 1! Try doing that at cubase.net.[good luck] HTH... The first bug you mentioned is a known bug and will be fixed in the uppcoming update, tho it only happens when no data file is open. C. |

I won't comment too much on the creative cards because I haven't used them in ages, most will agree if you're into gaming, get a creative/sound blaster card, but if you're into pro audio sound, run in the other direction. As far as your original question of Sound Forge vs. Cool Edit. I have both on my system, I very rarely ever use Cool Edit Pro anymore. Sound Forge can't compete with Cool Edit on a 1to1 basis. Sound Forge is a Stereo Wave editor. It is like Cool Edit without the "multitrack view" in this respect. I use Vegas v4.0 (a multitrack) and Sound Forge v7.0. These together will do everything Cool Edit Pro can do, but so much better and easier. For Radio production you will probably be more interested in the Vegas features. You can usually buy Vegas with a lite version of Sound Forge bundled with it, if price is a concern. This in my opinion would be a better option than CEP. |

Howdy fellow radio person who knows what a razor blade was originally used for! I do daily news production and agency commercial production with SF 6.0 and Vegas 4. These two products can do anything you would ever want to do as far as production is concerned. I have played with Cooledit, but never could get any serious work done. Folks at the station are amazed when they come over and work at my place. I can do more in an hour than they can do in a day. I would heartily suggest you get SF and Vegas, but get the SF bundle with Noise Reduction, and the Vegas with CD Archetech 5 if those bundles are still available. That is pretty much my setup, with an older version of acid for simple music looping. Again, I can do all kinds of stuff that in the old days was impossible, and I can get it done quick. RiRo |
