What to buy

Ok, I know this is a big subject, but I am completely new to Vegas+DVD, and want to configure a system to (surprise!) capture & edit video and audio, and author DVD masters for replication.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have already done the toe-stubbing work of figuring out which devices (DVD burners, capture cards, etc.) are and aren't compatible with Vegas+DVD as well as with other items like edit decks, house sync, wordclock, etc.

I have been doing straight video editing/mastering using Media 100 systems, to produce linear programs (TV, VHS, etc.) since 1994. I've used primarily analog sources (Beta SP, analog audio), but would like now to switch to a digital video format (both "prosumer" gear like the Canon XL-1 series cameras as well as pro gear) and also to use AES digital audio (in the pro gear case). I will still need to incorporate footage and sound from my old projects and archives, and would be especially happy if I could continue to acquire the analog sources using my Media 100 systems (Mac-based Quicktime), save the files on a LAN server, and then pull them over the LAN into my new (PC-based) Vegas+DVD system for incorporation into the DVD projects.

Also - for audio I/O, what interface is best to use with Vegas? I want to be able to start with say eight tracks of audio (both analog and 24/96 digital in) but be able to expand to at least 24 tracks. The audio interface must be capable of resolving to wordclock. Something like the MOTU interfaces would appear to be what I need. Anyone here using those (with lots of tracks & wordclock sync)?

Has anyone here successfully used (with Vegas) the embedded firewire functionality on the Asus P4P800 motherboard? Or any other embedded firewire on any other MB? I'm thinking I'll try out the Vegas+DVD package using my consumer camcorder first, then take it from there after I've figured out how to use the software to create a DVD.

Any and all replies with recommendations (for or against) regarding the many hardware choices will be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

My experience is much more limited than yours, but to answer the first part:
1) I've found the ADS Pyro Firewire capture card to be flawless. Others have found the same.
2) My Cendyne 105 (very similar to the Pioneer A05) works great. Never a problem.
Good luck on the rest.

Thanks for the reply! I'm surprised that nobody else answered this.

Starting to sound like a broken record, but for video hardware ideas try a post in the video forum. For your audio needs the newer motu 2408 mk3 may be close to what your looking for. The early 2408s can be a little flaky, I know, I've got one.

A budget amount would be helpful too, unless money is no option, then we can go all out for you.
