I've just completed my first DD5.1 DVD. All I can say is WAY COOL! SF thanks so much for bringing this technology to the desk top. I used Vegas 4 to capture and edit the video as well as to encode the AC3 file. My only suggestion is to develope some sort of algorythm that does the DD 5.1 panning automatically. I know Vegas will do that with keyframes and that is what I used in making my DVD, but that isn't really automatic. I was thinking of some sort of algorythm that senses increases in DB level and then panns that increase in DB to a given speaker. As it is now it takes a lot of time to pick out the specific audio you want to pan. But that is nitpicking. I love the way my DVD turned out! The DVD is of a recent family offshore fishing trip. The audio a trip like this presents is perfect for Vegas and AC3. Keep up the good work SF!

I used to crank out fishing videos myself. Never thought about it then but surround would be way cool for this subject.

Since you are into fishing (and presumably the big salty thing fish live in) here's one of my projects (stereo only but pretty good sound design by Clatter/Din.com):

Very nice. I wish I had been into this when I went on my Alaska trip. I can't wait to go back soon!

WARNING to dial up users. The MPEG1 is 17 MB. Cut and paste the link at your own risk!

The above FREE link is a video of a sailfish catch and release off the Fl. keys. It's all done with Vegas 4.0. The original sound was DD 5.1, but I degraded it for the MPEG1 posting.
