Subject:How to set Mic gain for direct Mic-In ?

I'm a newbie to SoundForge. Still using 6.0.

I'm trying to record directly into the sound card using a mic.

SoundForge Help tells me to adjust gain by double clicking on the Windows XP Speaker icon and adjusting the gain for the mic...

But this has no effect on the level SoundForge see's... it seems to have the Mic gain set at max and simply speaking into the mic softly will clip the audio.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Will

There are two volume adjustment screens. The one you are probably seeing is for playback and monitoring. Under Options / Properties select Recording. This will show you the volume controls used to adjust the recording level.

Chienworks... or anybody...

Adjusting the Mic Record Level does not effect the recording level in SoundFourge.

My mic is going directly into the Mic-In connector on my sound card.
I click the 'Speaker' icon in the Task Tray, Click Options Properties Recording to bring up the Record fader panel. Then click the check under Mic and adjust the Mic level to Minimum... still SoundForge shows max record level and clips when I record in a normal voice... or even in a soft voice.

Anybody have any idea's? I really need to get this thing working for a project.

Thanks for any info.

Will

Do you have more than one sound card (like one motherboard down sound chip and one external sound card)? If so, maybe you are not adjusting the record level for the one that the mic is actually plugged in to.

Check all of the following:
1. Options->Preferences->Wave: which soundcard is it set to? Make sure it is set to the one the mic is plugged into.
2. Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Audio tab. Set the default device for recording to the soundcard the mic is plugged into.
3. If the prefs in SF are set to "Microsoft Sound Mapper", you might try to check the checkbox for "use only default devices" and make sure the default device is as in number 2.
4. There is more than one control for adjusting levels, although most soundcard drivers seem to hook the built in windows volume control so that when you move the sliders on its own control panel, the same change is made to the windows built-in. Check to be sure.
5. In the windows control panel (#2) - see if "microphone boost" is checked.
