Subject:Optimised for Pentium4?

I was using Acid Music 3.0 on a Pentium3 800Mhz 640MB RAM Notebook. This time I have bought a new PC, Pentium4 2.40Ghz 1GB RAM Desktop, and installed the software. The thing is, when I render the project to a .wav file or something, the new PC (with a Pen4 CPU) takes LONGER than the old, Pen3 Notebook... For example, 2mins with Pen3, and 3mins with Pen4. Plus when I play one of my projects, which was played fairly smoothly with the Pen3 Notebook, it "stops and plays" with pops towards the end, which is normally caused by poor CPU power. With the new PC, CPU usage was so little (like 6% or something) but still, the above happens. After I bounced some tracks, which use some FXs, to a single .wav file, the track was played OK. Is Acid Music 3.0 optimised for a Pen4 CPU (with HT enabled)? I can't understand that the Pen3 Notebook shows better performance. Another difference is that for the Notebook, I use a USB audio interface with an MME driver, and for the Pen4 Desktop, I use an M-Audio PCI sound card with an ASIO dirver. Does it matter at all? |

look at my post about 2 pages back called "audio computers" i think that will help you a lot!!! lemme know. is your new laptop a "store bought" one?? (like compaq...gateway...dell...etc...etc..??) that post will help you a lot i think!! it sounds to me like simple "tuning" issues with your computer, thats all. --marc |

Thanks for your info, marcarotsky. My notebook (Pen3 800Mhz) is DELL X200, and the desktop is 'Shop-Made' which includes ASUS P4P800VM mother borad, Pen4 2.4GHz CPU, 80GB 7200 rpm ATA HDD, 256*4 MB DDR400 (qualified samsung chip) RAM. Neither of them has any dodgy H/W added on or S/W installed that may worsen the performance. The tunig of OS (Wondows XP Home) is virtually the same on the both PCs. Unnecessary features and services are disabled. And still, on ACID, my notebook performs better than the desktop. Like playing a project or rendering, which should be purely 'Spec-Dependent'... On the contrary, Cubse SE, my newly installed S/W which shall replace ACID Music (oops), performs FAR BETTER (well, of course) on my desktop. Actually it doesn't work right on my note book if I use loads of VSTi's (well, of course). That's why I've come to think ACID is NOT optimised for Pen4 CPU. Hope to hear anything regarding this issue. |

well, heres the thing.....it seems as if you know what you are doing when it comes to computers and their "tuning" abilities to be optimised to different specs. im kinda in the same boat as you. i have 2 computers....1 being brand new that i built. 2.4 ghz P4, 760 MB RDRAM (extremely fast ram...533 mhz, as oppsed to 133 or 200 mhz of DDRRAM. i would look into getting RDRAM if i were you, ITS BLAZING QUICK!!) your mobo. needs to support it though. and be careful, cuz its WICKED expensive!!! BUT, it is worth it. i do a lot of my rendering and sequencing on my old comp though. 6 or 700 MHZ athlon processor. for some strange reason...it is still quicker on that machine. i just use my new one for my mastering and mixdowns. although...the times you were saying. like 2 mins to render a track down...NO WAY!!!! even on an un-optimized new P4, it should only take about 20 - 30 seconds for an average length track to be rendered. if you did all those "tricks" to tune your computer and its still no good, than i really dont know what else could help. good luck though. --marc |

Adding to what Marc mentioned, what are the full specs on this Pentium 4 system? Hardware may be getting in the way. A CPU is just part of the equation. For example, a 7200 RPM, 8 MB cache hard drive outperforms a 5400 RPM, 2 MB cache hard drive any day of the week. Thanks for your reply, mD. The full specs of the PC are M/B : ASUS P4P800VM (i865G) CPU : Pen4 2.4GHz RAM : 256*4 DDR400 (qualified SAMSUNG chip) HDD : Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm 8MB cache Sound Card : M-Audio DELTA Audiophile 2496 On-Board Sound : AC97 (Disabled on BIOS) On-Board NIC : Intel 10/100 NIC (Enabled) On-Board Video : Intel Extreme2 (Enabled) Windows XP Home SP1 : Clean-installed with Hyper Threading enabled ACID Music 3.0g Sound Forge XP Studio 5.0f Cubase SE Studio Case Again, the thing is, newly installed Cubase SE Studio Case runs perfectly fine, Just as I expct from this Pen4 PC. Only ACID doesn't, hence 'Is ACID Music 3.0 Optimised for Pen4?' Anyway, cheers for your info, both of you. I'll try what you've suggested. |

There was that whole "denormal" thing with the Pentium 4, but that was a playback issue. Try this: Insert a Dither plug-in for the Master FX in the Mixer and set it to dither to 16-bit and see if your "stop and go" playback issue goes away. Try also temporarily disabling your network card. (Do it from within Windows XP's Device Manager.) The rendering issue has me puzzled; your system is certainly up to snuff. On average, how many tracks are there when rendering? How many FX are inserted? HTH, Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid mD's ACIDplanet Page |
