Subject:Error Message on opening Acid 5.0e

I'm getting an error message every time I open Acid. It reads:

"An error occurred starting Acid.
The reason for the Error could not be determined"

Has anyone else experienced this? I did a clean install. Is 4.0e OK? I have 4.0b and I didn't get the error message with that. Are there improvements with 4.0e over 4.0b

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Hi Chris,

Search under "error occurred" in the Knowledge Base, you'll find this about your particular message and how to fix. First sentence:
This error occurs only under Windows XP. It occurs due to the fact that the machine in use has Terminal Services disabled.

Sorry to tell only a search string and I'd give the URL for the answer but I'm really not sure what part of the huge string is needed. Anyone know?

Hope this helps, but if it doesn't then write back and give more info about your system,

-Suzan

The string is huge, isn't it?

It works, however, if I incorporate it into HTML. knowbody, does this help?

Thank you both. I did have Terminal Services disabled and setting this to manual removes the error message. But I really wonder why I need Terminal Services running for Acid 4.0e to work smoothly. SoundForge 7.0 doesn't give an error message. Acid 4.0b didn't. I disabled Terminal Services after reading about it on Black Viper's Service Configurations page:

http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

He suggested disabling it for security reasons. I don't need Fast User Switching and I definitely don't want Remote Desktop Server.

Is Acid 4.0e mores stable than 4.0b? I was having glitching on playback with some projects with 4.0b. The projects rendered OK. I still seem to get glitching with 4.0e (on one project at least). But I probably won't be glitch free until I ditch the Audigy Soundcard and get an alternative. But does 4.0e offer any advantages over 4.0d?

Thanks again,

Chris

ACID will actually run at its full capacity if Terminal Services is disabled; it just won't run as well if used by multiple users or via Remote Desktop.

4.0e is more stable than 4.0b, IMO. In addition to the fixes in 4.0d (or did you mean 4.0b?), 4.0e fixed (straight from the Readme):

-A bug has been fixed that caused ACID to crash after burning a project to CD while any MIDI input ports were enabled. .

-A number of record latency offset issues exhibited with some soundcards have been fixed.

-A bug has been fixed that prevented 24-bit playback when using classic wave drivers with some sound cards.

-A bug that prevented the Digidesign wave drivers from working has been fixed.

If you were referring to 4.0b, note that ACID 4.0 became a ReWire host starting with 4.0c. (You can use ACID as a mixer host or route MIDI tracks to a ReWire app like any soft synth.)

Thanks Iacobus, that's great information. I missed out on 4.0c so I meant 4.0b. Having rewire potential is a major change though I'll need to learn how ot use it. The bug fixes are important too. I guess I'll stay with 4.0e. From what you are saying if I don't care too much about seeing an error message every time I open Acid I can go ahead and re-disable Terminal Services. How can multiple users use Acid? At the same time across a network or are we talking about individual user profiles and preferences.

Hi again Chris,

I don't believe multiple users can access ACID at the same time. Even if they could, the results could be dodgy at best due to ACID's processor-intensive nature. (Most DAW apps are like this.)

It might work well if ACID is accessed via Remote Desktop, but that's only a client/server situation anyway. Multiple user accounts, I imagine, would work just fine as that's just on one machine.
