--> "Options/Preferences" --> Tab "General":

Deselect "Draw waveform and frames in Events" .

Bad thing about it is you do turn off both video thumbnails and audio waveform. No way to deselect just one of it.

Oblisk....Hope I'm not too late, but...Welcome to the Vegas forum!

This forum is one of the best 'features' that Vegas has, and don't be afraid to ask for anything.

Are you really seeing a huge difference with thumbnails turned off? If you could, please post the framerate in the video preview window:

thumbnails and waveforms on: ______fps

thumbnails and waveforms off: ______fps

thanks

To me they don't affect framerate significantly (if at all) but, unless I zoom-in to video frame level, thumbnails in video track are distracting and confusing (put cursor in the mid of thumbnail and see the difference between what's on thumbnail and what the real frame is :-). Also envelopes are much cleaner without thumbnails, and it's easier on the eyes overall.
For video event, seeing just the first frame (and maybe the last) is often enough.

But seeing waveform is important, if just to quickly spot parts of conversation or beats of music bed.

There is no real gain in disabling thumbnails or waveforms as far as getting a faster 'real time' higher frame rate in the preview window. A best maybe you'll pick up one or two frames more per second. Not worth the bother in my opinion.

off average 27.4 with typical filter load, on averaged 26.7.

Personally, I consider the thumbnail previews one of the best features in Vegas--since you can zoom in and out so quickly and easily when splitting and don't have to use the trimmer.

Premier shows the first and last frame as you requested. However, I really appreciated the graphical view in Vegas when I started working on Premier and turned on the icon view (which is disabled by default). Premier would take between 30 to 45 seconds to draw the screens which made using graphical icons unusable. Later, I was able to switch back to Vegas and couldn't believe how much quicker, and graphical, it was.

I would be curious to hear what kind of machine you are working on where the graphics are slowing it down.

Could it be that he has an awful lot of tracks?

From my experiences with 1394 playback stalls it seems there is some overhead to having thumbnails on. Certainly the constant stalls would go away if you turned the thumbnails off. But otherwise I've never seen enough of a difference to matter.

Oblisk was asking how to turn off the previews. That means he/she didn't yet know if it would help his performance. I wonder if it helped at all?
