Subject:HELP! Can't convert 48K WAV to 48K mp3

Customer has requested an mp3 from me at 48K sample rate, rather than the more usual 44.1K.

I've recorded the WAV at 48K, but despite what it SAYS it'll do in the appropriate mp3 save dialogs, when I check the properties, the resultant mp3 file is at 44.1K.

As expected, if I change the mp3 PLAYBACK sample rate to 48K, it raises the pitch, thus confirming that it is indeed a 44.1K file.

Urgent help requested - client is waiting for his file!

(I assume he wants it at 48K to insert my narration into AVID or similar)

Any help gratefully received!

Cheers,

Phil (in Merrie England...)

STOP PRESS - Guess what? It works fine in SF6.0.... ANOTHER SF7.0 glitch - grrrrr. $99 down the pan?

No repro here. Are you positive you are selecting a 48 kHz option in the bitrate dialog on the Encode Settings page?

Yes, absolutely certain, Sonic.

Do you still have SF6.0 on your machine as well as 7?

I do, and I'm wondering if that may be the cause of the problem.

I'm reluctant to lose 6.0, as I haven't kept the install.exe in case I need to put it back! (Being in the UK, I bought the download product for both versions.)

4.5, 5.0, 6.0 are all installed on my machine as well as 7.0. Dunno, will try a few more things.

Am I correct, when you changed the custom settings you didn't save it to a new template? I was able to reproduce your problem when I did that (template name says "(Untitled)".

Try saving the customized template before using it. You'll need to give it a new name, and it is a good idea to enter an appropriate description as well. Click the Save button (icon looks like a floppy disk). This method worked for me.

Its probably a better idea to use an external encoder, Lame is probably the best one.
http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/files/lame-3.90.3.zip
The gui front end for Lame is at http://www.dors.de/razorlame/razorlame.zip.
See http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=203& for recommeded settings

Alternatively, open a command prompt & type the following
lame --alt-preset standard infile.wav outfile.mp3.

I've rendered a 48 kHz WAV to 48 kHz MP3 in SF 7.0 without problems. Note that I only have 7.0 installed.

Sonic - you're right - I didn't save the new template - I'll try that tomorrow.

Thanks to all for the answers!

Phil
