What is the best sound card to work with Vegas

Serco wrote on 9/27/2003, 7:15 PM
I am radio station producer and we plan to change our old Soundscape SSHDR1 DAW system by a new computer with Vegas 4.0,

I need your input to help us with some choices we have to do.

1) What is the sound card you use in your PC to produce broadcast quality sound ??

2) We plan also to use 2 monitors side by side, which video card you use ?

Thanks for your replies. I will probably have some more questions for you experienced users of Vegas 4.

How many audio inputs and outputs do you need? 2 most likely.
If so, the Echo Mia is a very nice card that is stable with Vegas and very affordable. Great for broadcast quality material.

The M-Audio 410 should be good.
The Echo Gina for more than 2 outputs in the Echo line.
I have the Mia, but now I wish I had more than 2 outputs myself. :(

Echo has nice stuff, and the drivers are solid. I think for radio broadcast work you're going to want stable, stable, stable. I think the Echo will give you this (good pricing and several I/O options).

Do you like the RME sound card ? I have read in this forum lots of complaints about the quality of the support and the drivers.

How do the Echo and M-Audio compare to the Audigy 2?

I had an Echo Mia and ended up returning it because it was too unstable. I replaced it with an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 which was rock solid. I would stick with M-Audio products if I were you.

Although a bit dated you may want to read this:

Way more stable than the Creative!
If you have a couple hours to kill, do a search for Audigy in the Acid forums.

Like I said, I have the Mia. I'm very satisfied as far as the stability and sound quality goes. It's just that now I have Acid 4.0 and Vegas 4.0 and I'd like to play around with surround mixing. With only a stereo card, I'm S.O.L. :(
I'd get the M-Audio 410 if I had the money.

Interesting. There are many reports of the opposite being more the case. M-Audio is notorious for driver problems but if and when you get the right drivers in place, they are quite good. I'm biased towards the Echo cards. I've had 3 Layla's and have colleagues who also use them. Never a problem with anything and this is using them in several different systems.

Hello,

No any problem with RME, one of the better sound cards (Best Sounding and latency), and have the best drivers support on the market.

Cheers

Hey, if you are already a soundscape customer and need 16 or less ins and outs + SPDIF, the Soundscape Mixtreme PCI is AWESOME!!!! Very Soldin very stable, and until mackie bought it and screwed the company up, there was no comparable su[pport to Soundscape, just perfect. I needed more ins and outs so I had to switch to RME. Nothing but problems

The orginal guys have apparently wrested the company back from Mackie, but I don't know what the support is like becasue I rarely needed any.

Still running Mixtreme and Vegas

KAC ...

I highly recommend the Echo Gina cards, 2 analog Ins, 8 analog outs, Spdif In/out. I've been using dual Gina's since Vegas Pro v1.0 to v4.0 and have had no problems, I've seen recommendations from Sonic Foundry on these cards also.

Myst,
Are you looking to sell that MIA card? My midi sequencer machine needs a good sound card, that I can transfer audio in/out digitally, and I've been looking to pick one of these cards up. Send me an email at Rednroll@hotmail.com and let me know how much you're willing to part with this card.

Hi Brian,

I sent you an e-mail.

Basically, no I'm not looking to sell because to replace the Mia with something comparable that does surround would be too expensive for me right now.
I've even thought of the Revolution 7.1, but from what I've been reading the past few days, M-Audio isn't really recommended with a Via chipset (which I have).
Thanks for the offer.

The mixtreme is a good partner, because the user definable mixer will take care of all the no latency routing, monitoring, outboard hardware effects and mixing etc that Vegas can not do.

Also as your SS was flawless in reliability all these years, so will the Mixtreme be.

But! Be prepared for the shock of the PC problems you have never experienced with SS!

The SS model you have may be old, but the vegas s/w and its problems and PC hardware is a right pain to work with compared to the predictability of the SS that always does what you want when you want and will not fail.
What a high ideal (impossible dream?) to expect from Vegas and a PC.....
