When I read Sound Forge's system requeriments and seen: Platform: Windows® 2000, or XP ( I was VERY ANGRY and FURIOUS) That Sound Forge 7.0 runs only on Windows 2000 and XP is a INSULT for Windows 98 SE users. .... Windows 98 SE is the BEST windows version that exist for ever !!! ...BEFORE sony buys Sonic Foundry products, everything was FINE and COOL. .....and now SONY PICTURES has KILLED to Sonic Foundry products. ....This is not democracy... this is a theft and an insult !!! .....Sony... awaits for the consequences of your INSULT!! OK?! |

>>.... Windows 98 SE is the BEST windows version that exist for ever !!<< I doubt if you will find very many people (if anyone) who will agree with you on this. Also, SOFO made it clear some time ago that they wished EVERYONE would move to XP as its a much more stable OS. I took that as a serious hint and moved from 98se to XP. It been the best thing I have ever done to improve the overall stability and performance of my system. Its been over a year now and I'm still amazed at how much better XP is in virtually every way. drbam |

Alternatively, juan2003, you can always stay with Windows 98SE and with SF 6. They make a great team. Sony hasn't taken SF 6 away from you. Can you be happy with a product knowing that something newer is out there? You're using Win98+SF6: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

It's time to move up to something more current and stable. MS has discontinued support for Win98SE. |

It is rather saddening to see the end of an era. I have several computers still running 98SE and that don't have enough guts to handle the upgrade to XP. I'm not terribly worried about it though since these computers are old and slow enough that i wouldn't want to try running the newest software on them anyway. My old 133MHz Celeron still churns away nicely with SoundForge XP 4.5 and ACID 2.0. It's good for occasional play when my main computer is busy with other tasks. Windows 98SE is over 5 years old now. In computer terms, that's an ancient dinosaur. It was nice in it's day and it still has uses (hey, we still have a bunch of 486 machines at work for data entry and word processing and no plans or need to upgrade them) but for more serious work the industry has moved beyond it. XP and 98SE are enough different that it's a major task for a piece of software to support both. Sony/SonicFoundry programmers could have wasted a lot of time maintaining 98SE support, but chose instead to put that effort into making Sound Forge 7 better software. If the price of that is losing support for ancient operating systems, then so be it; move on. |

If anyone remembers I posted this thread awhile back. That was my concern that users would be upset like juan2003. http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=3&MessageID=201733 SF had to drop win98 support to make it Unicode compatible/optimized. I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure what that means. I have to agree that XP is a lot more stable than win98se. I use to think I had problems with my PC overheating, because anytime I would forget to leave it on overnight, I would come back in the morning and it was usually locked up. I upgraded this PC to XP and now it can run for weeks without me shutting it down and no crashes or lockups. This is just one of the benefits I've seen from XP. Now that most hardware available has XP drivers, there should be no excuse to upgrade. I'm sure people where complaining when SF dropped win95 support, but I don't hear anyone complaining now. |

Stusy, you may keep using 98SE for as long as you like, or at least as long as your current computer remains functional. No one will ever make you change. It's your choice whether you want to keep up with the rest of the world or not. As i said before, we've got quite a few old computers running 98SE and we will continue to use them for many more years since they do now everything we need them to do. Realize though that as time goes on you'll have fewer and fewer upgrade choices that will be 98SE compatible. |

"...are we rebels..? are we radicals..? NO, we are DEVO...! " Now that made me grin. Seriously, it is a bit sad for us rabid 98lite users. Using the Micro install and a couple of other tweaks our OS install is under 45 megs, and is *very* fast and stable. We have 2000/XP but only use it on machines that require dual processor support. The 98 Micro computers have always run better across the board than XP equipped equals for us and are certainly vastly more stable than anything else we have in here right now...they just go, and go, and go. Ah well, times change and technology marches on... |
