Hi, Jacen:
ASIO is a proticol that allows for improved processing of audio in personal computers over what is available in the standard computer operating systems. It results in much less lag time (latency) between the time a signal enters the computer (or when a softsynth is triggered) and the time that the processed audio is heard. If you want a detailed description of what the current ASIO proticaol (2.0) does, just copy and past this link into your browser. http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/WNAMM99/Steinberg/ASIO-2.0.html
Hope this helps.

In addition to what Baxter mentioned, note that ASIO, like other driver models, has its strengths and weaknesses.

For example, ASIO does have lower latencies versus, say, WDM, but it does not have the flexibility that WDM has. If you have more than one audio interface installed in your system, you will only be able to use one at a time using ASIO.
