I am evaluating Sound Forge 6.0e for prepping monophonic vocal speech. There are a large number of silent gaps in the 60 minute recordings (hundreds) that range from 0.5 sec to 10+ seconds. We would like to reduce silent gaps that are over 1.0 seconds to a uniform 1.0 seconds (the 0.1 to 0.99 sec gaps would remain.) I have experimented with the Trim/Crop with the "Between phrases" option. This sort of works, but I can't see how to specify a minimum/maximum silent duration. I looked in the FAQ and forum. There were questions about this capability in the Sound Forge forum, but no answer as to how to do it. Is this possible? If so, how? TIA, Lynn A **************************** **************************** Hi Lynn, Thanks for writing. There is nothing that we have that would allow you to do this unfortunately. The Auto Trim/Crop is the closest thing, but that wouldn't allow you to remove all of the silence except for one second. Ted Hoch Sony Pictures Digital **************************** **************************** Hello Ted, Actually, I did some experiments with the 6.0e demo, and it seems like it may be possible. The question seems to come up regularly in the forums, with no resolution as of yet. The Fade-In parameter doesn't seem to do anything, but, oddly, the Fade-Out parameter seems to determine the longest gap. If it is set to 500ms, then longer than half-second silent gaps softer than the threshold will be truncated to 500ms. Using 1000ms for the "Fade-Out" paramteter results in silent gaps being truncated to 1000ms. What do you think? Seem workable? HTH, Lynn **************************** **************************** Hi Lynn, I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose it would work. Good idea! Regards, Ted Hoch Sony Pictures Digital |

I do this manually in CDA5. I split the event at the start of the silent bit, and again at the start of the next bit to keep, then drag the subsequent event over, crossfading a second of the 'mutual silent' bits. geoff |

Since I understand what a paraclete is, I prolly know what kind of material you are working on. I am away from the big box (the computer at the office with the sound equipment and software) but I do know how to use auto trim-crop to do it and have settings. I prefer a .7 sec pause, as it sounds natural, yet cuts lots of dead time. In some messages of an hour or more, depending on the speaker, it will cut the overall time in half! I use this on audio books all the time. RiRo |
