Subject:How to get Acid to use rear speakers for playback

I have an SB Live! Value and it supports both front and rear speakers. In Acid Pro 3.0, I can not figure out how to specify playback through the rear speakers instead of the front speakers. I can do this in Sonar (it gives me a choice of three outputs including front, rear and headphones). However, in Acid, when I go to Preferences/Audio/Default Playback Audio Device, it just lists the single driver with no way to specify any thing other then the front speakers. I am running Windows XP with the latest SB driver from Creative installed. What am I missing? Do I need to upgrade to 4.0 to do this?

Thanks,

Steve

ACID 3 only supports Wave drivers. The SBLive does not expose its 'speakers' seperately with Wave drivers. SONAR shows these because it uses WDM Kernel Streaming.

There is no work around, other than to update to ACID 4. You can then use the Surround Mapper in ACID to use the rear speakers directly with the SBLive.

Thanks, Peter. I have the demo of 4.0 and I still don't see how to make the rear speakers the default playback device. I set the playback device type under Preferences to "Direct Sound Surround Panner" and everything plays through the front speakers. Can you please explain how to do this, so I can see how it works? I would really appreciate it. Thanks,

There is no "automatic" way. You select the Direct Sound Surround Mapper as your default output device. This will route the front/rear/center-lfe to the appropriate buses by default.

You can then route the actual stereo master bus on the mixer view to the rear speakers.

Understand, the intent of the Direct Sound Surround Mapper is to provide surround monitoring support for 5.1 ACID projects.

The only alternative you have is to upgrade to audio hardware that specifically provides drivers that expose the rear channels as available ports.
