I was disappointed to see that it does NOT include the Noise Reduction plugin.
To stay competitive (e.g. with Adobe Audition nee Cool Edit Pro), Sony/SOFO should include the noise reduction plugin as standard with Sound Forge.

It's not too late, Sony! You still have some time ...

I was hoping they would integrate Sound Forge with Vegas. I mean who edits audio without multitrack capability anymore. I'm sure they don't want to loose that money making scheme by combining everything into a single unit. But come on, both Sonar and Audition (Cool Edit Pro) have the multiple tracks of Vegas, wav editing capabilities of Sound Forge, and the Loop capabilties of ACID, and noise reduction capabilities of NR 2. Plus these integrated packages are like $600 compared to a grand total of about $1200 for the complete SoFo suite.

The only thing no one can match is the Video Editing Capabilities of Vegas. But come on. How big is that audio market to just throw it away. What audio editor is going to pay that much for SoFo software when they can get 99% of the same capabilities for half the price?

Maybe that's the true reason they were loosing so much money and ended up having to sell to Sony.

I could not determine whether they have finally fixed the issue of Vegas markers not showing up in SF when editing (and vice/versa). The lack of this basic function drives me crazy and results in a great deal of wasted time!!

"Maybe that's the true reason they were loosing so much money and ended up having to sell to Sony."

Obviously not, because within your own message you mention Cool Edit Pro/Audition. So Cool Edit Pro, did it the way you're recommending and they had to sell to Adobe. So your statement is mute. They did it that way, because not everyone is a power user and needs a Stereo editor, just like not everyone needs a multi-track, and not everyone needs a looping tool. So what's the next best thing to meet everyones needs? Creating 3 seperate apps, which integrate well together, and you have the option to purchase the part you use the most. I prefer to make 3 small investments, rather than making 1 large investment even if those 3 add up to be more than the one large. At least if I make the 3 smaller investments, it doesn't hurt as much in the future if I decide I like another app for stereo editing, etc.

Actually I'm not sure Syntrillium sold because of lack of money. But more because Adobe was looking for a good audio program and offered them too much to pass up.

And as far as the 3 separate apps theory, it could make sense, except that I didn't know anyone from my college days that would choose a single track program over a multi-track program. Of course that doesn't necesarily mean much since colleges are full of stupid people without much experience. But still.

Everytime I upgrade I find my self debating whether I should have put my money into a single track editor when I could have gotten a multitrack editor for the same price. It's not as big of a deal for me now because the upgrade prices are reasonable, but that's beside the point. The thing I'm worried about is that they aren't going to be gaining many new customers with the current setup.

Vegas is my main app (for the video features) and that was the reason I decided to go with Sound Forge and then ACID later on. But, I'm just saying, I know a whole lot of people who don't choose Vegas/Sound Forge specificly because they can get the same thing audio wise from programs like Sonar, Audition, Cubase, DP4, (take your pick), for about half the price of a Vegas/Sound Forge combo.

And to top all of that off the Vegas/Sound Forge combo doesn't even have support for hardware control surfaces like the other four I've already named.

Probably what SoFo or now Sony should do is take Vegas and integrate Sound Forge and ACID into the single base. Sell Vegas as a full video application. Then take Vegas and remove all video editing features to only leave a single preview track and rename that to something like Sound Forge MT or whatever.

The big trick is figuring out how to integrate everything and keep it more intuative than the other guys. But that's what the SoFo programers used to be so good at.

Intuitive-ness is exactly why SoFo never did such a thing. The learning curve grows exponentially because of all the compromises you have to make in the UI, not to mention the underlying plumbing for each tool is completely different and not necessarily compatible with it's siblings. Personally, I hate trying to use those kitchen-sink products because I spend more time in the help file than in the app.

Different tools for different jobs is a *good* thing and more is not always better. Whether people like paying for them depends on whether or not they've found this out for themselves.

Just my $0.02,
J.

i fail to see how one could edit several samples/wave files at the same time. how exactly do you envision multi track sample editing? could you give me a simple example? in Sound Forge i work with one sample at a time, and i can't see why i would want to edit a fade out for 2 samples at once for example. or do i misunderstand entirely? please enlighten me. :)

I think they announced that it would become available at the end of September.

Do you think they'll offer free upgrades to people who purchased SF 6 within the last three months, or one month,...or...two weeks...?

It would be nice.

ATP,

In most of the integrated programs it works almost the way it does in Vegas/Sound Forge. You double click a file in the track view and it will open in an editing window. The biggest difference is that you don't have to save the file before going back to track view. In other words you can edit a file and go listen to it in the over all mix then if it doesn't sound good just undo what you changed and try it again or whatever. Any temporary files are handled in the background untill you decide to save. In Vegas/Sound Forge, if you want to listen to what you changed in Sound Forge, you have to save the file to hear it in Vegas.

Both ways work similarly and both ways get the job done. It's just that an integrated solution appears cleaner at times. And that doesn't even touch on the music loop and beat matching features of ACID.

But anyway, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe separate packages is the better way to go, even if it costs more. But, it seems like Sony is going to have to do a lot better job of convincing the rest of the world. I've tried with people that I know and haven't succeded.

Am I the only one who thinks they should include Noise Reduction as part of Sound Forge?

The lack of it in Sound Forge is making me think about buying Adobe Audition which does include noise reduction.

I think they should include it just to avoid the pain in the butt process required to re-register it! I love how easy it is to register SOFO apps but NR is aggravating as hell!
Anyone else have this experience?

Well, I emailed Sony/SOFO to ask if they would include Noise Reduction. The answer is NO! Here is the response:

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately we will not be including Noise
Reduction with Sound Forge 7.0. It will still be availble however as a
separate purchase. If you wish to order it you can do so either online
or over the phone. If you have any further questions please feel free

I would agree that it would be nice to include NR standard in both Vegas and Sound Forge. If not, Sony should at least drop the price to decent plug in prices. Like $50.

For the longest time I used Cool Edit 2000 which was basicly Sound Forge with NR, except for the nice price of $70.

I eventually I gave it to someone else and decided "why not try Sound Forge." It was definitely more integrated with Vegas than Cool Edit was.

But, it tis a sad thing that one could get 99% of the features from Sound Forge (or the cool and important ones anyway) for less than the price of just the NR plug in.

Adobe is offering the Video collection which is a very complete set of tools. I've been surpirsed that SF never offered something similar. Perhaps they will soon. I also feel Sound Forge is a great program but overpriced. They would make a ton of money from Vegas users if they offered us a discounted upgrade path. As it stands now Adobes offering with After Effects, Audition, Encore and PPro looks tasty but PPro still sounds buggy.

I wish they would give a choice between the NR 2 package or Acoustic Mirror. I use NR all the time, but just about never need AM. I can get by with the other verb packages...

But since I have NR 2, bring on SF 7.

You know, actually NR 2 was a brilliant move back in the day. When it was developed not many people had that kind of noise reduction capability and it was very much worth $200. But now that every program out there has it built in or else only supports VST plug ins, I think including it into all packages might help lure new customers when they are making their initial decision.

I'm sure there will be a few come on board just because of the new owner. But I doubt there will be many switchers with the current offerings/price ratio.

Or maybe they just a multi million dollar advertising campaign. Something that implies they are above or equal to Final Cut Pro, DP4 or the other high reputation players.

HI !!

What news to tell us?, yes!.. I talk to you... :)

Always, Sonic Foundry (to me always will be "Sonic Foundry" and not "Sony", "Playboy", "Mc Donald", etc, etc), well, always SoFo sold theirs Plug-Ins.

Because, I remember, that a Pug-In never were including like an own feature of the product. like these examples:

"Vegas Video Plug-In Pack 1.0"...for Vegas Video 3.0
"Noise Reduction 2.0"..................for Sound Forge 5.0 and 6.0
"XFX 1,2,3" since 1998
"Express FX1 and FX2 Plug In" since 1998
"Batch Converter 4.0 Plug In"......for Sound Forge 4.5 and Sound Forge XP 4.5 (1998)
"CD Architect 4.0 Plug In"...........for Sound Forge 4.5 and Sound Forge XP 4.5 (1998)
"Spectrum Analysis 4.0 Plug In"...for Sound Forge 4.0, Sound Forge 4.5 and Sound Forge .....XP 4.5 (1997)
"Acoustic Mirror 1.1 Plug In" (1998)
"5.1 Surround Plug-In Pack 1.0"..for Vegas 4.0, Acid Pro 4.0 and DVD Architect 1.0

The next version of Noise Reduction, could have "Hiss Reduction" like a new feature above this Plug-In.

Thanks to each one of you !!!

....Everybody waited for a great and enjoyable surprise with this new version.

"Noise Reduction, could have "Hiss Reduction" "
It already has Hiss reduction, that's the beauty of this plugin.

I agree though, that the Noise Reduction plugin, should come in some type of bundle package, which it has in the past. It's only outrageously priced for other DX app users. And heck, it's not that overly priced as a seperate purchase, have you purchased any Waves plugins, that are this good?
