Subject:which sound card / device should I use with Acid?

I'm using Acid Music 2.0, and while this is already swamped by Acid 4.0, it works fine for me and I've not really outgrown it yet.

However, I do need help in picking the right sound card, since I'll be getting rid of my current computer. Here's what I'm hoping to do with the new soundcard:

1) Record live instruments and vocals (via direct inputs and microphones) as tracks on Acid (note: I record one instrument at a time, and never record a full band that might require 4+ simultaneous inputs). Currently, I send everything through an 8-channel analog mixer, and send the right and left main outputs of that mixer into a 1/8" stereo line in jack on the soundcard. This works OK for certain things (like guitars), but is pretty bad for vocals (they sound all muted and cheap). So, I guess the soundcard would have to record the live instruments and vocals clearly by means of high quality line in jacks.

2) Record keyboards / synthesizers (played on the same computer using Reason 2.5) as tracks on Acid. To do this, I believe I'd have to route the sound output from Reason through a specified output on the soundcard, then back into a specified input on the soundcard (which Acid would record from). Is there a more clever way to do this? (note: I am aware of the method whereby one saves the Reason track as a .wav file, but that does not allow me to "play along" and record in real-time).

Any help or advice is appreciated. My budget (for the soundcard only) is about $100-$200.

1) I'd probably suggest Echo's MiaMIDI. It has balanced 1/4" I/O, S/PDIF I/O and MIDI I/O.

2) Get ACID 4.0. Now that ACID Pro 4.0 has ReWire 2.0 support, you can actually insert Reason like any other soft synth and record that way without having to fiddle around the old way. All you have to do is record a MIDI track and route it to a module in Reason in real time. (The Reason manual goes into basic detail about how to do this.)

You can pick up ACID 4.0 for about $149 by looking around. Believe places like Best Buy carry ACID Pro 4.0 for about $200.
