Subject:Playback error.. a real mystery for you guys
Posted by: fony

Okay.. first of all my problem:

when i load a FRESH install of acid 4.0d,e,and demo as soon as it opens the first thing it says is "do you want to save this project" seems odd, but whether i pick yes no or cancel is irrelevant its the fact that it asks thats odd. then whether i load an older track, newer track, an EMPTY project or even just a fresh project with 1 wave in it the error is always the same:

an error occured while starting playback
an unexpected error has occured

now.. when i click on a wav/mp3/wma/whatever in the explorer and preview it.. it actually gets a fatal error... referring to the acid40k.dll file each time with every type of file.. and even if i open a track in the chopper or track properties window.. it gives a similar error.. different gui reference of course but the majority of the error is very similar...

now.. here are my specs

win xp pro
AMD 2100+ 1.73 ghz
512 DDR
SB Audigy Platinum EX (but the breakout box is busted so its only the pci card)
3 hard drives each with about 5-10 gigs free
no programs running in the background.. not even antivirus
4.0 demo, 4.0d, and even did the 4.0e update and none of them worked..
BUT i reloaded 2.0 and it worked just fine.. sound forge works fine... vegas works fine... cd architect works fine.. everything else BUT acid works fine.

now my past, failed steps taken to find a solution:

clean install of windows xp
clean install of acid 4.0
upgraded to 4.0e
uninstall/cleared registry/reinstalled again
upgraded again
upgraded directx to 9
lowered hardware accelleration
updated sound card drivers
changed the power management acpi settings to "standard computer"

i think thats about it.. so here is the list of errors and what i did to get those errors
PLEASE DISREGARD THE "DEMO" AND "BUILD" NUMBER BECAUSE THE ERROR IS THE SAME NO MATTER WHICH VERSION OR UPDATE IS USED

I don't understand programming, but how come there would be an acid40k.dll file if we're only up to 4.0e? Unless that stands for something else other than the release version. Maybe SoFo can enlighten us.

The "k" stands for "kernel".

fony: Version and build DO make a difference on the errror dumps. Why? Because they are VERY different binaries. The odds that the dump will indicate the correct location in the 4.0e code is unlikely.

What do "SuperTap.dll," "MetaFlanger.dll," and "nView.dll," belong to? I recognize the others as being Windows system files (like, "GDI32.dll").

okay... reinstalled the patch and i got this

AppName: acid40.exe AppVer: 4.0.0.408 ModName: sfdlssynth.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.42 Offset: 00004170

right on startup.. the splash screen didnt even make it up.. and the error file is bigger than war and peace so i cant really look over that with a fine tooth comb or even an afro pick

supertap and metaflanger are all waves plug ins that i have reinstalled..

and nview is the gforce 4 card daughter programs that let you make adjustments and all that to the way your screen looks (i have dual monitors)

Peter, thanks for the "k" explanation!

What if you uninstalled those plug-ins and the GeForce's utility? Does ACID work then? (Be sure to restart your system first.) It's important to keep it as barebones as possible so the problem can be wittled down.

well the problem is that even with no plug ins being used in a project at all... i mean NOTHING at all.. i get the same error so the plug ins arent the problem and the nview thing is the same thing i had on it before and it ran fine.. see thats the weird thing.. everything worked fine until i had to wipe everything and reinstall windows xp pro again.. but now everything is back to the way it was.. just much much less shit (programs, files, etc) and now i get this error

Even if you don't use those plug-ins in a project, they could cause problems with ACID. Have you tried uninstalling them anyway just to see if it makes a difference?

Is there an updated nView utility for the video card?

Also, try setting projects to 16-bit/48 kHz. (The Extigy does that resolution and sample rate internally.)

This is an indication that DX is not installed correctly.

Others have found that the only way to fix this is to reinstall everything from scratch.

Some have had to revert to a complete wipe, but I would try

DX first
ACID second (uninstall and reinstall)

If that failes, then a complete reinstall of your OS
Then the first thing you should install should be ACID.

If ACID works, then you will know that if it fails after you install something else that it is that "Something" elses fault.

thanks dave, i am passionate about music, very, and it drives my fiance nuts. Not only do i have my own solo music but i am part of a duo called Negative pH (www.negativeph.com and ampcast.com/negativeph) and on the OMD Ampcast.com we held the number one position for a few months and have been in the top 5 for even longer. I also run a small business doing work for musicians (cd duplication, web design, hosting, the works) which can be found at www.dasmusik.COM and as if that wasnt enough I also run a fairly large music based community called Das Musik (at www.dasmusik.NET. and as if that wasnt enough (again) i am also the house photographer for the huntridge (a very large venue here in las vegas) and have done photography for big names such as Spine Shank, Adema, Man Made God, etc etc etc.... so yeah.. i really love music in every form and the fact that i cant even get my own music to work really kinda gets me down.. but i know it'll come up eventually.. even if it means reinstalling the OS then so be it you know?

thanks for your interest mate
