Are the playback meters moving in the Mixer?

Try going to the Audio tab under Options>Preferences on the menu bar. Choose the appropriate driver model (under "Audio device type"; more than likely you'll choose, "Windows Classic Wave Driver") and then choose the specific hardware output for playback immediately underneath.

Also ensure that the specific hardware input is selected via the playback device selector button in the Master channel of the Mixer. (It's the one with the one blue arrow that points to another arrow amongst a set of arrows.)
