Is it my imagination, or does SF6 seem to resample mp3 files whether there has been changes or not -- I wonder if this resampling process degrades the overall quality of the final file or not.

Thanks,
Kevin

I think it's your imagination, but maybe if you explained in greater detail...

Sound Forge doesn't make changes to the original file unless you tell it to. You need to "save" or "save as" before any changes are saved. Even if you've made changes to the file and you decide to close SF, it'll ask if you want to save the changes.

The answer to the second part of your post is yes. Any further compression of a compressed file will result in lost quality. Again, please explain what makes you believe that SF is resampling.

Well the reason why I thought that it was resampling was because it see to reprocess the file. Then it would report a strange message if even i have not made a changes to the file. I believe that you are correct, thanks for your help.

To clarify, when working with compressed formats like mp3 Sound Forge decompresses the file, and then recompresses it again when you save it. This way it isn't recompressing data that is already compressed. I believe this is going to be handled differently in future versions of Sound Forge.

OK -- so even if I open the file and do nothing but listen to it, it does not resample the file. See I was curious since, it does not close like a normal wave file does. Anyway at this point I have no choice so, thanks anyway.

Bye Kevin
