You can use (free) Cheese Machine or Synth 1 (especially with the user banks from kvr) for pads. Z3ta+ (not free) has some very nice pads; the demo inserts silence periodically (I think about every 10 seconds), but you can run the demo as long as you want to to see if it's an investment you'd want to make. Seems to me daAlfa2K is the one that has the random pad generator that I was having so much fun with.

and if you feel like spending money, get absynth. i doubt you'll use another synth after trying it

Well, much as I like Absynth I think it's pretty well hopeless for a lot of the basics. The osillators have horrible aliasing problems which are very obvious in some simple sounds. Absynth 2 claims to have improved this area, but check their forums and you'll see plenty of other bugs.

Perhaps even better might be Spectrasonics Atmosphere.

well, nothing is perfect. however, for the kind of music i create, absynth is best synth i've found, and i tried almost every one that had the words ambient, pad, soundscape, etc mentioned in a review or whatever. but i think any synth would work actually, if used in conjuction with some good effects.
speaking of effects, do try izotope spectron and ni's spectral delay.
and yes, Spectrasonics Atmosphere might be very, very good (from what i've read). too bad there's no demo or something. i'm short of finances for synths.
