Subject:Scanning audio plugins lock up

Like a few others I've read on this site I too have had problems with the little grey box saying, Scanning for audio plugins. My PC also locks up, and the only way out is to restart the computer. I upgraded my motherboard to an Athlon 1.8Ghz processor, with 320MByts RAM, Soundblaster Audigy 2 soundcard, and from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I also have Cakewalk Sonar 2 on board together with various audio software packages such as BBE Sonic Maximizer, Raygun and others I can't remember at the moment. I'm unable to use Soundforge 5 now because of this problem. Is this a problem of Soundforge, or is it tied up with the plugins? Can anyone help, as I've a lot of work to get on with? |

AnalogX makes a little utility called DXMan that will help track down the misbehaving plug-in. |

Thanks Sonic, I did try out your suggestion, but to no avail. What I did try is Control, Alt, Delete, and then Windows Task Manager to end the task. This did get me into Sound Forge 5 immediately, but the DirectX plugins were not available when I was attempting to work on a song for some reason. I should also mention that I also have Creative SoundStudio on board, and the strange thing is that the Sonic Foundry plugins are accessible to me with this programme. Could there be a conflict there? Is it possible that my PC is giving priority to Creative Sound Studio, and is not recognising the Sound Forge plugins? I'd be grateful for any advice from any source. |

Thanks Sonic I tried your method again, but to no avail. I load in a sound file from an external source but my DirectX effects do not show up at all in either Effects or Process. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Sound Forge 5 until I'm blue in the face but still no sign of my DirectX. Anybody with any other ideas? |

I just had a simular problem.. after much hair pulling and re-installing Windows & SF, I finally shut down anti-virus. That fixed that and some other freezing problems. Hope this helps. If that does not help, try installing or re-installing the lastest version of Direct X (v9) from MS. |

This is probably not real helpful as it isn't specific, but I have had similar problems twice. The first time was when I "upgraded" my computer and switched from Win 98SE to 2000.... I have no idea what actually cause the problem because so many things were messed up... in the course of it, things finally started to work. I also had this problem when installing the PSP delay pack. I like PSP as a company and their products... for some reason, their delay pack caused problems. I uninstalled, reinstalled etc. I finally installed the VST version of their plug ins, scanned them with a VST wrapper and didn't install the DX versions. Then, I installed the DX versions after rebooting, and voila..... both versions were there. I then re-ran the wrapper and told it not to look for the VST versions (so only the DX version shows up) and everything has worked fine since. Where I think I went wrong... I did not originally install the PSP plug ins into the default folder. Even though I eventually did use the default folder, it didn't help until I did all the stuff mentioned above. As a result of the first install, (and even though I used uninstall to remove the plugins before a fresh reinstall) I think the registry was already messed up somehow. In any event, when they were first installed in the "wrong place", they hung the programs that were scanning for plug ins. Soooooo, the obvious questions... have you added anything new or upgraded a plug in. If not, try taking them off line one by one and seeing if that helps. It may well be just one plug in. Been there and it ain't no fun. Good luck. |
