Sorry if this is a little off-topic; I didn't know where else to post. Anybody have any ideas on a good mic for recording acoustic guitar? The one I have now is junk -- am trying to spend less than 200-250, in possible. Looking at Shure sm-57, AKG 535, maybe even Behringer ECM8000... Oh, and PRE-AMPS... Can someone recommend one that's not too expensive? |

I like Shure microphones. They seem to give the best quality for the money. I don't think that any of the mics you mentioned are really designed for studio recording of acoustic guitar. You might look at something like AKG C1000s to stay within the $200 budget. |

For acoustic guitar (and many other applications) I would go with the Oktava 012. A small condensor mic that is often compared to high end Neumanns and sounds incredible on acoustic instruments. They are always on ebay for $100-200. I would not use a C1000 on acoustic guitar - way too edgy and brittle sounding. For a mic pre, the best deal IMO is the Studio Projects VTB-1. Another piece of gear that is compared to units costing much much more. Very clean and quiet and also has a tube drive if you want to warm things up or even distort the crap out of it. They are also on ebay new for $130. HTH, drbam |

Another vote for the Oktava 012 - great bang for the buck. As far as Mic pre's go, for the money Mackie mixers have some pretty decent pre's & if you can go up to about 500 bucks the FMR audio RNP is supposed to be awesome. Yoyodyne |
