Encoding while capturing from VHS with VV3

I've used Vegas Video 3 for its audio features only. But since the video capabilities are there, I decided to make use of them as well. What I've been trying to do is to capture the content of some VHS tapes (mostly concerts), treat the audio (EQ, noise reduction), and convert to VCD.

Since the quality of the image is not the priority (and I don't have a large HD), I'd like to be able to capture and encode at the same time using the PicVideo mjpeg codec, which I can do when capturing with VirtualDub.

The reason I want to use SoFo Video Capture is because it "sees" the input from my Aardvark sound card, which would enable me to capture audio with better quality than with my sound blaster card. And VirtualDub doesn't "see" the Aardvark card's inputs.

How can I get SoFo Video Capture to use the PicVideo mjpeg codec while capturing?

Thanks,
LC

What format is the video coming in - PCI TV capture card (Bt878/Fusion based VfW/WDM capture device) or DV through OHCI?

Tried the ShowShifter.com demo to see if the Aardvark card is recognised? That captures to PICvideo by default. Check for any timing issues on the Aardvark. You'll probably have to buy ShowShifter to see the files as AVI and not the prepurchase "SSF". However if this works and suits the resolution that you'll be downsampling to to get VCD - then maybe you'll be best served with this than anything else.

Hi, RBartlett

I'm capturing from a VCR with a PixelView Play TV Pro (Brooktree Fusion Bt878). My OS is Win98SE, so the driver isn't WDM.

I hadn't heard of ShowShifter before. I'll give it a try. Thanks a lot for the tip.

Just out of curiosity: is it impossible to get Vegas Video Capture to use a compression codec while capturing?

Thanks again,

LC

I would trust ShowShifter lip sync calculations better. Them folks know the foibles of having video captured on the PixelView software and the audio captured on your "soundblaster compatible" source. I think SoFo relies on Microsoft VfW to sort this out - which is fine for premium cards but not at the 4:2:2 cheapo end that you and I use. I mostly do DV into Vegas incidentally - which is perfect.

It sometimes seems odd using PVR/TiVO-like software to capture AVI on, but ShowShifter (both on my Hauppauge WinTV and my LeadTek WinTV2000XP card with SBLive! and onboard audio respectively) has over the 2 years given the best form of capture of 4:2:2 D1 video (via SVIDEO which hits the quality a little).
