Subject:USB Hard Drives?

Does anyone have an opinion on the use of external USB hard drives?
I'll have my software on an internail EIDE drive and my smaples on the USB drive.
Are the USB drives a good fit for this type situation?
Thanks, all.

Don't get a regular USB drive. USB drives are slow. Reading is slow, and writing is damned slow.

Of course, the new fangled USB 2.0 High Speed Mega Throughput Super Duper protocol, that nobody seems to be able to decide a name for is a heckuvabunch faster, as is firewire. Fast drives are a real convenience, so just skip regular USB and go straight to one of the faster plugs. You can get switchable drive firewire mounts for cheap, and then buy your own drive, upgrading as necessary with no new overhead. Saves a lot of money, and the portability can come in handy.

Certain external drives can do odd things, such as hang the machine or this strange 'simmer' mode where they just sit and spin for no reason. That could, in theory, throw off your sound card, but I haven't tried it.

Are you using a laptop? Why not get a big 7200 rpm drive instead?
