Subject:Using Acid with Reason 2.5

Has anyone started using acid with Reason 2.5- I'm thinking of getting reason for the soft synths & was wondering how well acid works with reason- also where do you get the re-wire utility? how does this work?

I am currently using Acid w/ Reason 2.0. I have each on a separate PC and have Reason chasing MIDI Clock generated from Acid. This works great except Reason does not stop when I stop generating clock from Acid, which is a pain because I have to take Reason off line and manually stop it. If I am recording in Acid and I stop then Reason stops. Any ideas why this may be happening? I just came from summer NAMM and spoke w/ some folks at m-audio but they believe (and I do too) that the problem is Acid is not generating the stop command.

Other than that the two make a great team. Enjoy!

that sounds cool- have you rendered your reason/acid files? how do they sound? I will definitely be using both in the same computer - do you see any obstacles?

I attempted to use both in the same computer but I have found that Reason running on my old 266 works best for me. That is where I cut instruments/vocals and mix. Is there a better way to run them both on the same computer? I got it all working this way and although it is a little cumbersome, it works. This may sound goofy but at first I tried syncing them through Midi on the same computer - going from the MIDI output to the MIDI input of my Aardvark Q10 but I had too much processing going on and my PIII500 couldn't handle it all, hence the two computer setup. Once I get everything laid out in Reason I usually digitally bounce track each in real time to Acid and then I render everything to import into Pro Tools (studio at work) where I add vocals and mix although with a better computer I would like to do it here at home.

The stock Reason sounds are pretty good and there are a lot out there to download. By far it is the best package for the money.

yeah,
thanks- by the way, if you are a registered owner of 2.0, the 2.5 upgrade is free & i just read a review that was quite praiseworthy- I was thinking mostly using reason's soft synths & processors in acid but it sounds like I may have to re think my strategy - whaddaya think?

I write reviews for Audio Media so my Reason code is separate - for the press. I have to get the upgrade directly from m-audio. They are mailing it to me so I am anxiously awaiting the upgrade. I would start off w/ Reason and if it won't do everything you want then look into Acid. Acid is great for loops and even recording but the one thing about recording is you cannot punch a track or have different audio on the same track - at least with 3.0. I am not sure about 4.0. I don't consider myself an adavanced Reason user so there may be other ways to integrate it with Acid. I just found the MIDI method worked best for me. I know that Rewire will integrate directly with Acid but I couldn't tell you exactly what Rewire is.

Let me know what you decide to do. I am always interested in learning new methods.

As far as what Rewire IS-- it's like an internal MIDI link (between Reason and ACID in this case), which replaces any cumbersome external routing setups, and uses a LOT less CPU resources than these as well. As for WHERE you get Rewire, you've already got it if you have two Rewire-compatable programs; it's automatic. In the case of ACID 4.0 and Reason 2/2.5-- just start ACID first, open your 'Preferences' menu, and a check box for Reason should be right there under the 'Rewire' tab. Make SURE the box is checked, and THEN start Reason. It helps if you have your system settings adjusted so that "Background Processes" have priority over "Programs" (Control Panel/System/Advanced Settings) in XP. You might have to tweak some other system settings as well, depending on your setup-- the software manuals have recommendations in their respective 'Optimizing' sections. Speaking for myself: once I handled all of the above, the combination of Reason and ACID kicks @ss! Good luck... ~DALORYN~

mortal - there you go! Sounds like I need to upgrade to 4.0 and my MIDI troubles will be no more. Now I can officially give my kids the old 266.

Thanks for the post Daloryn - it is appreciated.

ReWire is not an internal MIDI link between Reason and ACID. ReWire is a sample accurate "audio port" link between the Mixer and the Device (in ReWire lingo.) The entire transport and sync between the Device and Host are completely non-MIDI based. The MIDI from ACID to Reason is driven by the audio engine of ACID. Even asynchronous MIDI- i.e. playing an external keyboard to trigger a Reason "synth" - is driver sample accurately using the audio engine.

The MIDI implementation in ReWire 2 permits the ReWire Device (Reason, P5, etc) to exposes MIDI output ports/channels/groups to the ReWire host/Mixer (ACID). These appear as MIDI "destitnation" just like an external MIDI port does. There is no "transport" or timing control inherient to this aspect of the connection. Each of the MIDI ports or channels that a ReWire device expose can have a wealth of information concerning what they do and even permit details as to what each CC msg or even Note msg handles. For example, the Reason Mixer can be controlled through note on/of and CC msgs. Each of these "parameters" of the mixer could be exposed. The notes to drum pad can also be enumerated.

Additionally, a ReWire device can also send MIDI msgs to the host, though this is not as common among ReWire devices.

Oops! "Sample-accurate 'audio-port' link--" that's what I MEANT to say! ;-)

I use Acid 4.0e and Reason 2.5 in Rewire mode, works like a charm, really adds something to acid since I'm not a big fan of it's midi sequencing abilites (no offense), but with Hubis loopback device I can play thru acid, into Reasons sequencer and have that output trigger a softsynth back in Acid, pretty cool. ;)

Wow guys! I am just about wetting my pants now. I was going to start tackling soft synths in acid & figured that if i was going to buy a soft synth, it might as well be reason- since the new build is out now. Lately I've just been chopping up tape recorded synth that I made years ago- next stop....E-bay!!! thanks for all the advice and help -

I have reason 2.5 (just got it, first time user) and AP4e. Under prefs, rewire tab it says Reason 2.0, not 2.5, is that normal?

thanks
