Subject:New ACID install on XP will not play WAV files???

Some background. I just upgraded from Windows Me to Windows XP Home and I selected a complete reinstall (not upgrade) but was disappointed to find that XP Home would not allow me to format the C: drive! Argh!!! Anyway, so now I’m re-installing all my apps and...

I reinstalled ACID and it will not play any WAV files. Isn’t that strange? It won’t preview them or let me drag and drop them on the timeline. I’ve never seen anything like this before. If I drag a WAV file from Windows Explorer I get the error message, “None of the files dropped on ACID could be opened.”. I also have VideoFactory 2 and it can’t open any WAV files or AVI files but it will open MP3 files! Now here’s where it gets strange. I also have Vegas 4+DVD and Vegas plays WAV files just fine.

I already tried Repair and that didn’t change anything. This is a brand new XP Home installation. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try to get this to work?

It sounds like you most likely have left over file format plug-ins on your hard drive. Try removing all Sonic Foundry Software, then deleting the:

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins

folder and reinstalling. This should correct the trouble you are having.

Yea, I was afraid of that. That’s why I added the first paragraph about the XP Home upgrade not letting me format my C: drive. I will try to wipe things clean and re-install. Thanks,

Yep, that did it! Thanks a bunch. I uninstalled all of my Sonic Foundry software, deleted all directories and registry entries and I’m now re-installing everything and it seems to be working fine. The only problem is your registration servers don't appear to be working so once I have everything installed I will have to give you guys a phone call to register. I even tried the web site and got an SQL ODBC timeout error page. (not good) :(
