Subject:Big problems with Batch Converter, need some help please

I have been using the Batch Converter (v5.0b) for months without problems.

Suddenly one day I started getting the error message "an error occurred in opening a codec" for every single sound file I tried to convert. I got this same message on ALL sound files, with ALL conversion settings - even with the same files and settings that I had converted before without problems.

I contacted SF support and they asked me to uninstall the batch converter, delete the "C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plugins" folder, and re-install the batch converter.

I started the batch converter uninstall procedure, but about 80% through, the uninstall procedure hung. Even alt-ctrl-del did nothing, so the only way I could get out of it was to hard-reset the PC. I did, and when WinXP booted back up, the Batch Converter seemed to be uninstalled. It was gone from my desktop, my start-bar and my Control Panel.

I then tried to re-install the batch converter. but the installation procedure freezes about 80% through, while displaying the message: "Registering modules". I have tried many times with the same result. I have wasted too much time on this now, and I am desperate for any kind of help. I emailed back to the guy at SF who wrote to me and asked me to uninstall/re-install, but I haven't got an answer.

I have deleted every trace of the Batch Converter from my system - I think. I can't be sure, since the uninstall procedure froze before it was complete. I've deleted it from Program Files/ and I've deleted the /Shared Plugins folder. I've even deleted the install files from Program Files/Sonic Foundry Install/ and re-installed directly from CD - but always with the same result: A total PC freeze when the installation progress bar reaches about 80% and displaying: "Registering Modules". The only way to get out of it is to hard-reset the PC.

I've paid for the product, and I sorely need it each and every day, so it's annoying not to be able to install it. Can somebody help?!

Thanks,

When you installed the software initially, were you logged in as a member of the Administrator's group? I ask because personal software just works *better* on the Windows NT/2K/XP platforms, if the installs are done (with the user) as a member of the Admin group. Businesses will typically just use the Admin account to do the install, but on personal systems installing as the user is more practical. If the software was installed as a normal user or a power user, minor system changes made later on, can have a rollback effect on security permissions, and apps that worked previously.

ALSO... any files created or modified when logged in as an Admin (instead of as the normal user), could become inherit the Admin permissions. They would then be inaccessible to any non-Admin user (and also to that user's software app which is trying to access the *secure* storage location).

I realize this is vague, but it's something to consider - especially if you do decide to bite the bullet and reinstall the OS and all of your apps.

Good Luck

Another consideration is most common Windows installation problems are solved by rebooting > deleting the contents of the Windows\Temp folder > reboot, then try installing again.

The reboot first insures there are no files in Windows\Temp waiting to be installed at the next reboot and also in the case of XP you will need to log off/log on to every user's Temp folder to be sure.

Have you tried editing the registry to remove the Batch Converter section completely? You may want to export this section before deleting it.
