Subject:Stuttering on ACID 4.0d

My ACID project stutters after I add some effects (reverb and chorus) to vocal loops on a new project. I don't remember this happening before I updated to 4.0d. Any ideas?

Well I guess it's not because of 4.0d cos I just went back to 4.0c and it's doing the same. Oh yeah......I'm using a soundblaster audigy soundcard on windows XP.

Anything else running in the background? Is this an Audigy 1? Did you try setting the project to 16-bit/48 kHz?

No nothing running in the background and yeah I set all my projects at 16-bit/48 kHz. Been doing some trials using different FX and there seems to be only this problem when I use the ExpressFX Reverb.

Weird. That's not an especially resource-hungry effect.

What's your basic system specs? (CPU and amount and speed of RAM?)

I suspect the problem is with the ExpressFX Reverb. There was a bug in the XFX Reverb that would cause the FPU to go into denormal mode and chew up cycles much faster than normal.

It is possible the same bug exists in the ExpressFX variant and has not been fixed.

Try the XFX Reverb and see how it goes.

Is there some reason you prefer the ExpressFX Reverb?

Hi, Brasilia:
I'm not sure if your stuttering problem is the same as one that I experienced with ACID 4.0, but if so, I think I have found a cure...

I'll describe the problem that I was having: Once in a while, when I add a one-shot WAV to an ACID layout, and then go to play back the track, ACID will stutter and drag while those one-shots are playing. I have to quickly press "STOP" on the playback, or else it will drag to the point where I can't do anything but wait for the playback to stop.

One night I discovered that I could right-click on the problem track and select "Edit in Sound Forge," then when the WAV opens in Sound Forge, I just select "Save As" and save the file in the same place as it was before (with the same name). Then when I go back to ACID, the WAV plays flawlessly.

Of course, this fix requires that you have Sound Forge, but most of us probably do anyway.

I hope this suggestion helps others out there who have the same problem.

Your computer is not a Dell is it? I noticed that the dell's seem to have a problem with hardware for some weird reason.

Thanks for that Astrophere. Yeah it sounds like the same problem exactly but did it happen when you used any FX? It seems to be just on Xpress Reverb with me so I don't use it anymore. Anyway, if it it happens again I'll try out what you suggested. Thanks for your help ~~~~ David
