DVD Menu Theme Editor (beta) 1.0 Ready For Download

bcbarnes wrote on 6/21/2003, 7:10 AM
For those of you that feel brave - you can now download version 1.0 (beta) of DVD Menu Theme Editor - An editor for DVDA theme files.

You will have to have version 1.1 of the .NET framework, which can be downloaded from Microsofts' web site if you don't already have it.

There is no documentation - I'm writing it up now. I will post here when it is ready.

I'm still working on the UI, and shadow blurring isn't shown in the preview window (although you can still edit it all you want). Otherwise, functionally, everything should be there. Please post comments and feature requests here. Be sure to "right click" on different objects in the preview window and the "graphics asset list" for functions that you can't get to any other way.

Thanks for making this available Brian - it looks great.

I haven't had a chance to use it seriously yet, but I've got a couple of observations to make based on a few minutes playing about.

1. I'd prefer it if it could be squeezed down to fit on a 1024x768 screen, though there's a lot of detail on the screen and I can see that this might be tricky. If this can't be done, one possible alternative might be to make the preview appear in a separate window from the other details - that way people with two monitors could have the preview screen on one monitor and the rest of the details on the other. That would be great for me (I have a two 1024x768 monitor dual display setup). But this is just a suggestion and I'm sure it would complicate the programming considerably so don't hesitate to ignore it if it's too awkward to implement.

2. I'm not sure exactly how I provoked it, but a couple of times during my playing around with it I managed to get it into a state where BOTH the "Preview at NTSC resolution" and the "Preview at PAL resolution" items on the option menu were ticked and the actual display was stuck at the NTSC size. In this state, clicking on either of the "Preview at ..." items made no difference - they both stayed ticked and the actual dimensions of the display stayed unchanged. I'm afraid I can't give you a precise sequence of clicks to get it into this state, as whenever I try to make it happen I can't. But on a couple of occasions when I've been idly playing around with the "Preview at ...", "Simulate Device Aspect", "Draw Action Safe Grid", "Draw Title Safe Grid", "Draw Asset Boundaries", and "Show Highlighting" items on the Options menu it has ended up in this both-resolutions-ticked state.

Other than these observations, it looks great. Many thanks again for making it available.

Mark

MarkWWW,

Interesting about both menu items being ticked at the same time. I'll play around and see if I can reproduce it. Thanks for the info.

I am trying hard to shrink things down so that it will fit in 1024 x 768 - but I don't know if I'm going to make it. As of this morning, it is 1168 x 888, so I've still got a little "rearranging" to do... I have a couple of other ideas that may help, too.

I've also added an "alignment" grid, with the ability to "snap" when dragging things around, and I've clean up a couple of other bugs. Mostly, I've been working on getting some documentation going. Should have another update in a week or so.

.NET framework, eh? That lets me out, I'm afraid, because I'm not about to soil my system with that bull****. A real shame, too, as I really could've used a good theme editor.

Interesting. I didn't think that using the .NET framework was a problem since V4 requires it for scripting. I guess if you don't use the scripting, though, then you wouldn't necessarily have the .NET framework already. I may have to re-think that position. Anyone else dislike the .NET framework enough to not install it?

I didn't have it and installed .NET to try your Theme Editor. Nice job. Haven't had time to really use it yet, just installed it. As far as .NET, it can be uninstalled from the usual add/remove programs from Control Panel. I also installed Service Pack 1 and the updates as well. Still rock solid. No problems. I'm curious if my long standing Windows Explorer problem with come back on this system. Not yet.

I too have installed your beta theme editor. What a great tool - thank you. I had to install the NET framework and my system is still rock solid. However I was not expecting any problems with the NET framework since so many people are using scripting without any great dramas.

If the interface could be shrunk down to 1024 x 768 that would help a lot but I can still use it as it is.

like others, I haven't done much with it yet, but love the concept - thanks for doing this. (I too would like it at 1024 x 768.)

Regarding .NET - no need for paranoia - scripting is turning out to be a unique treasure within Vegas, and it needs .NET, so simply instal it - I've never had or heard of any problems with it.

Looks great,
Maybe you can put it in a resizable window with scroll bars instead of shrinking the whole window.
About .NET, Had it for vegas scripting.

I want to let everyone know that version 1.1 is now on my website, at:

http://www.briancbarnes.homestead.com/files/Setup.1.1.zip

Lots of changes, including getting the UI down below 1024 x 768.
There's contact information in the help file so that you can email me with comments/suggestions.

Brian.

P.S. I already discovered a bug with the new version. If you set the editing grid size to zero, and click on "Show Grid", the program hangs. Sorry about that.

Well, the 1.1 version I released yesterday had more bugs than I thought - I guess I was in too big a hurry to get the smaller UI out. Anyway, I've fixed several of them, and placed a new version 1.2 on my website at:

http://www.briancbarnes.homestead.com/files/Setup.1.2.zip

I can't get it but will try again tomorrow, much looking forward

cheers

I've updated it again, for various reasons, so the best bet is just to go to my website and use the link, as the name gets changed for each version. Go here:

http://www.briancbarnes.homestead.com

There's a link to download the setup file at the bottom of this page.

If your using Windows it seems a little strange to be complaining about Microsofts .NET framework. All versions of the OS newer than XP will have the framework installed by default anyway (e.g. Windows Server 2003).

Interesting though that you referred to v1.1, I doubt this is the version that most people have installed, they are probably using v1.0 (aka v1.0.3705). However, I'd assume that it should run on both given the minor differences, have you tried it on v1.0?

Doesn't everyone check the Microsoft update site daily to see what new goodies are available???

Just kidding...The binaries for the app specify the 1.1 framework, so using it with the 1.0 framework would require a re-compile - and I no longer have the 1.0 framework SDK to do this.

Just wanted to say that I have used your theme editor now for a couple of projects and found it to be quick, easy to understand and in the words of a paint product here in Australia "it does exactly what it says on the tin"

I keep scanning the Microsoft update site so have no problems with you using NET 1.1. I believe in updates, occasionally you can get burned but your software, NET 1.1 and XP Pro work very well for me.

I'll keep checking your posts and your site for further updates as you deem them necessary.
