Have you tried the 4.0d update?

If the error still occurs when you use this update, uninstall and reinstall using just the update. It can act as a standalone, full version when installed. (Be sure to keep your serial key handy.)

Try uninstalling and then deleting any leftover folder residue, then reinstall using the update. (By default, the folder is "C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\ACID 4.0")

If that doesn't work, boot in Safe Mode (repeatedly press F8 while your system boots and then select Safe Mode), uninstall ACID and then reinstall. Immediately after installing, reboot into normal mode.

Be absolutely sure nothing else is loading in the background. Uninstall anything you haven't used in awhile (it's a good idea to uninstall in Safe Mode, especially problematic hardware and hardware drivers) and keep only what you need.

Try also reducing or turning off video acceleration in addition to updating your video card drivers and your soundcard/audio interface drivers.

The error msg indicates a plugin has failed during enumeration.

What plugins do you have installed beside those that ship with ACID?

What OS are you running?

It sounds like there may be a bad or bogus DirectX plug-in that's failing to properly load during app startup. Perhaps you can sniff it out using DX Man from http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio.htm
