Okay, here's the deal, I do a LOT of work(all of it actually)in ACID and Vegas,I LOVE the SOFO stuff even with the occassional bugs, because they sound SOOOO great!!!! My issue is this, I want to get the best mixes I can using this Kick ass stuff, but I am forced to mix/master(I use the term loosely) using headphones, because of a LOTTA logistical stuff that I don't want to bore you with now.

So will some REALLY knowledgeable pros please recommend a set of phones to use that are designed for this problem!!! Curently I am using the Sony 7509's,but I must admit that they are not very accurate, the low end is very misleading. I am on the cusp of actually doing some of this stuff for some $$$(not a lot), but I would like to do the best I can with my particular circumstance. A proper studio envrionment is in the near future, so I just need to buy some time, and also,I think having a good set of "true" phones is good for any "studio" set up.

Also, I am not willing to spend over $200.00. Hell I can get a decent set of KRK Rokits for that right now. Any advice is REEEEEAAAALLLLYYYY appreciated!!!!!

SONY MDRV700DJ

All the way, in this price range probably the best you'll get. Look around, you may find them for about $110.

Headphones are not ever the best way to mix. Generally they are bass shy so you tend to mix the bass too loud. I use sony 7506s and AKG 250s, but I don't trust them to be accurate. If you have to mix to headphones - no matter what brand you use, then check your mixes on different systems so you can learn the weaknesses of your headphones.

i second DKeenum's comments. having said that however, i also have the Sony MDR-V700 DJ headphones and i can assure you they are definitely NOT lacking in the bass department. if anything, there is too much bass in them.

still, i'd use headphones for the initial mix and pannings etc, but it would be advisable to do the final mastering on a pair of proper monitor speakers, or alternatively hifi speakers if you don't have monitors.

i use the sony 7506's...they are good headphones, comfortable, but the mixes are Nowhere near as good as i can do on my real monitors though...highs and panned instruments like pads are always too low in the mix on headphone mixes and the bass is a total gamble as to how it will translate.

that's physics for ya.....a big part of how you perceive bass frequencies involves how much you can actually feel them. a 40hz bass drop that is barely perceptible in headphones may be shaking the room on a real system..

I got the Sony MDR-V600s a while back, based on a respected musician's high praise for them ("They are surprisingly flat," which I think means more true to the actual sound). I've been quite pleased with them. They used to be $99 at Best Buy, but they may have come down.

I, too, have no choice but to mix using headphones. In fact, because my mixes are intended specifically for headphone listening (brainwave entrainment stuff), I have no intention of mixing with anything other than headphones.

I have both the Technics RP-DJ1200A and the Pioneer HDJ-1000. Both have plenty of sound in High/Mid/Bass areas.

Now, I mostly use the Pioneer HDJ-1000's since they feel the best.

just 2 cents from a DJ's point of view

"because my mixes are intended specifically for headphone listening (brainwave entrainment stuff), I have no intention of mixing with anything other than headphones."

Diane, I just have to say that is amazingly cool.

I'm thinking someday of getting a set from http://www.extremeheadphones.com/, but will probably wait, since I have a set of etymotic ER-6's (http://www.etymotic.com/musicians/er6more.html) that do quite well. They're horrible for jogging though, since they're tightly sealed inside the ear canal, every time your foot impacts the ground, it sounds like a big squishy bass drum.

Disclaimer: Opinions expressed in this post are my own. Sonic Foundry does not endorse wearing headphones of any type while jogging. :)

Hey, thanks, Joel. It IS cool. Now to get better at mixing the really good stuff to go with the entrainments. One day I'm going to completely reorchestrate and remix what's up on my Ultradia site. So, so much to learn to do all this.

I think the best headphone research site on the web is Head-fi
www.head-fi.org

Those folks are serious about their headphones.

A good place to buy headphones is from Headroom
www.headphone.com

They have a lot of good info on their site, headphones for different applications and their reviews are honest. They have no problem dismiss a set of headphones that they sell. They will point you to a better pair. They also have a 30 day return policy which is good because you won't really know how you like your headphones until you get used to them for a bit. They don't carry Sonys, though, they do have Sennheisher, Grado, AKG and Beyerdynamic. You could even buy two pairs and A/B them and then pick the one you want and return the other one.
I own the Sennheiser 280pros which have good isolation and a flat presentation, they are a good choice if you are not going over $100. The sennheiser 600 recommended above are most expensive but really sweet. They are open and the 280 are closed, if that matters to you. Beyerdynamic has some really nice closed headphones at a higher price point.

You don't need headphones that will power up your bassline for your own satisfaction. You need headphones that plays frequencies without amplying any of these. It's the same question for the speakers. Yamaha NS10M are the studio standard because they are so shitty that you are sure that your sound will come out HUGE from anywhere else.
